It's called ambient oclusion it can be acheived in several ways. You can use IBL otherwise known as image based lighting which is very similair to a dome light rig or you can use GI otherwise known as global illumination. If you want to use GI you need Brazil or Mental Ray for 3DS. A domelight rig produces very similar results and do esnot require any special plugins.
A dome light is a series of lights all pointing in towards the center of the world each with a small shadow depth map. Look around there are tutorials for these techniques.

3dsmax does indeed support GI, look up Lighttracer in the 3dsmax help
For a dome light, I would highly recomend using a script called e-light, dont remember the link but it can be found in google.

Hexodam, the light tracer was only implemented in release 5, not everyone is working on the current version:) That said, before I upped to 5 I used many GI plug-ins, HDRdomelight, Trinsica area light, another dome...domelicious maybe something like that. E-light is a fantastic script it was written by a 3d artist going by the name of skyraider, it seems to be the quickest of the scripts I've used. Light tracer though is right in the ballpark as far as render times, and IMO produces better results. Being the proud owner of a sluggishly slow PC I have had to use every trick in the book when it comes to rendering GI. Not much longer, I am going for the dual xeons very soon! Anyway Meverha1, now you have a list of ooptions to achieve your desired result:thumbsup:
