Hi all,
Got a problem with max freezing up when I turn on smooth and highlights or opening the material browser.
I've tried lowering the texture size for the viewports, changing the drivers from openGl to Direct3D and even software mode. I've tried multiple graphics cards, including the geforce 4 4200 and the radeon 9700 pro.

The problem seems to occur on files with many textures (no matter how small they are).

I am presently running:
-Max 5.1 / Character Studio 4.1
-Win 2000 sp3
-Dual 2.4 Athlon
-1.5 gigs RAM

I've tested under every troubleshooting level, but nothing. I've changed around memory, I've changed bios settings, reflashed my bios, and even tried a pci graphics card. I think it isn't card related anymore.
I've tested these files on 2 other machines an they work fine. I tried another, and it didn't. System specs were quite different for all machines.
I've tried replacing textures, deleting objects, and even saving of the matlib and opening it in a blank scene.
I've cleared out superfluous map files, and I've waited for the program for about 10 minutes.
My only other guess is I've got to try reinstalling max.

What do you think?

SOLVED!

It was a network path. My computer was referencing itself across the network. when it tried to find a texture across the network that it already had, it was hanging. I've redirected my paths and it all works fine now.

Hay Erilaz,

Thanks for that, I too had max just start to freeze on my last night when I went to open the material editor in a file I was working on. Thing was when I opened the material editor just after starting max, it was fine. My solution was to merge, the scene that crashed, into a brand new file. Then it all worked fine.

Now I don't think I have any mapped/missing network paths, but its worth a check now.

Thanks

hi Erilaz,

I know this is an old thread, but I am experiencing the exact same problem and haven't been able to resolve it.

the max file basically just keeps reloading/accessing the texture from the network. If I work locally it doesn't happen. Also, if I disconnect the mapped drive, but remain connected to the network it works fine - thereby forcing it to access the textures locally whilst remaining with the absolute pathname in the Max file.

what did you mean by "My computer was referencing itself across the network"? I don't think I am accessing any textures accross the network that aren't supposed to be.

any help greatly appreciated
