View Full Version : First post and a lil question
Deestrakt 05-05-2003, 11:32 PM This is my first post here, so hi everybody !
Seems to be a real instructing place, full of nice people here
Well, guys, i start right away with a question..
maybe its stupid, but i'd like to know if sb already encountered that.
I noticed that when i get really close to a poly object i'm editing, sometimes the blue lines of the edges gets "hidden" in the mesh..
its not easy at all to see them. plus, it only happens in ortho view modes like front/left/right etc...it doesnt happen in "perspective" view. and its not happening when HyperNurbs is "on".
english is not my natural langage so it aint easy to explain :hmm:
see the images below, it will explain it better :
first, this is, for comparison, the mesh in HyperNurbs mode, its ok. its easy to see the edges.

now, pic 2, the same view with HyperNurbs turned "off"
thats where the problem appears...

and, to get things a lil more complicated, here is pic3 : when i turn symmetry "on" (on pics 1&2, symmetry was "off", i forgot to mention) (hypernurbs is still turned "off" here).
with symmetry "on", it goes back to normal....until i select a poly and then it goes "weird" like in pic 2..
i'm not sure if its normal or not. maybe its related to the size of the object ? i mean, maybe it happens only when u zoom in very close onto a small sized object.
tell me what u think guys...

try applying a material with a slight transparency, you should then be able to see most of the mesh all the time ( I'f I understand what the problem is correctly :) )

Is this a better option than using x-ray?

the transparency is a nice idea, I didnt think of it in fact.
i tested out but, globally it gives quite the same result than X-ray.
its still a bit crappy in X-ray mode, but globally ok, except when there is way too much edges around :hmm:
its a way around the problem but i still wonder if its normal or if theres something i could do to avoid that.
but its no big deal, since it encounter this problem only from time to time. thx for your replies anyway :)
possibly its anti-aliasing or the lack thereof.
welcome to Cgtalk dude.
The people are great and squid has connections to the Playboy mansions.

thx JIII
well, could be about anti-aliasing..
but i'm not sure since it doesnt occur in perspective view mode, neither when HN is on...
bah, anyway, i'll find out someday
and i noticed Squid's bunnies yes ;)

What version of C4D are you using? Be sure to have installed the latest drivers of your graphic card tho

welcome aboard :)
could it be a smoothing problem? i normally erase the pong-tag while modelling. with a pong-tag applied, cinema smoothes the mesh all the time, that might be the reason while the lines get invisible

R 8.1
using a Geforce4 Ti4200, with the detonator drivers certified by Maxon (the 41.x something..)
btw, does anybody has or know about recommendations for the "best" way to set opengl settings in C4D preferences ?

well, i dunno. its true i didnt try to remove the phong tag.
i'm at office now, dont have C4D here, but i'll check that this evening.

Don't delete it, set it to 0°

Yep, lowering Phong should take care of it. If it doesn't try playing around with the zoom/dolly ratio. If the camera is very far away and zoomed in a lot it can cause some problems. Also, sometimes it helps to reset the view to Default (View-->Edit-->Frame Defualt) and then reposition.
