View Full Version : UVW Unwrap?
TheGoozer 03-07-2008, 01:06 PM Hi,
I'm modeling a simple creature but it's not finished yet. But the last time a wanted to use the UVW Unwrap tool to practise it didn't go as planned.
Now I'm wondering what I have to do to texture a creature correct.
If I use the UVW unwrap I get this:
http://img223.imageshack.us/img223/7410/unwrapviewdi6.th.jpg (http://img223.imageshack.us/my.php?image=unwrapviewdi6.jpg)
(click on pic for full view)
But in a tutorial I saw this:
http://img340.imageshack.us/img340/9683/texturingfordummieslm3.th.jpg (http://img340.imageshack.us/my.php?image=texturingfordummieslm3.jpg)
(click on pic for full view)
So it doesn't match at all. What's the cause of this and what is the most efficient way to texture my creature?
Thx!

What have you done to get the result in pic No1(except applying an unwrap modifier)?
Nothing I guess, so the result is in fact correct.
The main reason between your result and the tutorials of the result is simply some work you got to do by yourself.
There is no magic button solution for a proper unwrap(at least I don't know any)
Check your help files(specialized->Game Design->Mapping a character), there are tutorials for that subject, I suggest the pelt mapping approach.
If that's not enough to start with, try google, there are tons of tutorials for unwrapping.

If that's not enough to start with, try google, there are tons of tutorials for unwrapping. I found some tutorials, but the result isn't right. When I Unwrap my creature (I tried different mapprojections: cilinder, box...) and I select only one ID. I still don't have a perfect side or front view unwrap. I need this so I can paint my texture in the right form.
So maybe one of you guys know the cause of this. Or a professional way to texture a character or creature. If so, please share your knowledge.
Thx by the way...

Do you know by any chance what you are doing? Have a look in the help files, the chapter about uvw-mapping(which isn't anything different to uv projection) might be worth a read.
I found this one (http://www.waylon-art.com/uvw_tutorial/uvwtut_01.html) very helpfull.
Start with sometinh simpler than a face or creature, start with a cube, work through low poly models(this (http://www.scriptspot.com/3ds-max/face-maker) script creates low-poly heads very fast) and if you understood the concept behind unwrapping, try again on your creature. Looks like additional work, but definitely worth the time.

To get the result you want there is the help file, but what I usualy do and what always gives me results is clicking on the whole model using UV unwarp(faces in your UV unwrap). First click PLANAR and then click edit. You should see something similar to your first image. To solve this problem keep your image selected and then flatten it in the edit window. Change the strength from the default 45 to 61 and then you should get a flattened image of your model.
The only problem is the computer computes this for you and you probably won't get anything that resembles your model. This is were your experience will probably hinder you in your efforts. Just try welding the virtexes that belong side by side together. After a while you should start getting something that looks like sheet 2. I hope this helps. Then again there are always online tuts to help you.
