Hi gang. If it's all the same with you, I'm going to try my hand at entering this challenge with a new model. Why? Well, because this will be my third try at texturing something and I want to start small. I also only have Poser and Bryce to render in, so my options are limited when it comes to complex models and textures. Still, I plan on giving it my best and who knows...I just might (almost) win. :)

I should be done with the model making tonight and start some texture work tomorrow. Any help during this texturing process is welcome!

Anyway, this one looks good also. keep working

:bounce: :bounce: :bounce: This things looking really cool...I can't wait to see it finished. What are you modeling this creature in? Not Bryce I hope?

Nah, I model in Rhino, I just render in Bryce sometimes. Thanks for the kudos. This is what I've done so far...I don't know if I'm going the right way or not. Help!!

Hey duder. I like the model. You say you model in Rhino, so is that guy NURBS? (I haven't used Rhino, so I know nothing)
They texture is coming right along. You obviously can draw. All the musculature and everything looks like it is there. So is this going to end up being a mask, or are you going to keep adding to it?
My only concern is how you are going to map it. If it is an extreme side view like that, you are going to get some stretching on the top and bottom seams of the model. But hey if it is a mask for something else, then I guess it doesn't really matter. Masks kick ass. :buttrock:
;)

Alright, well keep up the good work.

Hey, thanks. I really don't know what I'm doing. Rhino is all nurbs and it hates textures. My only texturing option is Bryce or Poser. THe don't handle bumps very well though. Here's a bryce render of my textured model. I don't like it much.

And this is the color map. Like I said, I don't know what I'm doing. I may just paint over the bump map as if it were a painting and submit that image as my entry instead of using it as a t-map.

Yea the bump map texture looks pretty good, but I don't think that Bryce texturing is doing your model justice. It looks like the model is modeled really nice.... Also I think that you should try and create a new layer and paint over your bump map...that's a better Idea, then just ditch the bump layer when your done painting. Did you put that bump map on the model you rendered...it doesn't look like it. Do you have a wacom or are you painting with the mouse?

I am using a mouse. Okay, stop throwing the food at me. :) I just tried the same model and texture in Poser. Much better render, see? Still not great though. :(

Oh, an dyes, when I rendered in Bryce I used the Bump map. It didn't use it the way I wanted it too. I forgot Bryce4 doesn't do bitmap bumps well. So, what should I do with it now, huh? I don't like the head area and due to my export settings being low, you can't se the eyes and the eyelids are just gone entirely. :( Here's the Poser t-map with the eyes and nails.

You know, provided the tools you are working with, that last render looks pretty good, I'd say. The textures have a lot of life to them. I like the coloring, too.

Thanks. I've always been told it's not the program but the person who uses it....

Let's just hope that holds true. ;)

Hmmm....
Something that really bugs me is the resolution of your texture maps... they look rather pixellated.
I also agree with b.Schulz, in that there actually doesn't seem to be too much wrong with your actual maps (other than what I said above), it's just that your texture editor and renderer really sucks :(

"Thanks. I've always been told it's not the program but the person who uses it...." - yeah, but software can really hold you back, when you could be doing so much more with a better piece of software. I do think your work is really admirable considering the fact that you are using such horrible primitive programs (sorry, I really hate Bryce), but I think you have reached the point when you really deserve to graduate to a better piece of software that will suit your level of artwork.

Otherwise, all that said, I think your texture maps are working just fine so far :applause:

I agree with leigh about textures resolution. Modelling is really excellent, but those maps look really to low rez.

Teyon
04-21-2002, 02:18 AM
Thanks!!

Yeah, the resolution is pretty low, admitedly. I'll try it on a higher rez. I know someone with Max...I'll see if he'll let me borrow his PC next weekend to try texturing with. I don't know why he bought Max...he never uses it. So next week another Poser render (it seems to handle things better than Bryce) with a higher rez set of maps. Thanks again.

Hey teyon great work, however I have found that working from a darker color to lighter usually looks more organic. Try making a new brush in photoshop. First make the image in greyscale, white is transparent. Take a bunch of different sized circular brushes and overlap them at varying darkness transparencies( I find 10-20 is good), thus you get overlapping transparent spolches and when you get something that works define it as a brush and use dodge & burn and/or color to overlap these new brush shapes with. I guarrantee that it will look better whether you simply use it subtlely or a large ammount, because it creates "skin sploches" which add to the realism of the skin. I came up with this back before I used a wacom :) hope that helps, and that I didnt confuse you too much. Your stuff is great btw :) -Jeremy-

Yea your last render looks better than your first. I agree with everyone...your work is great...we just need to get you onto some better software, but since you gotta work with what you got...It looks like from your first to your second render you started to figure some stuff out and how to get more outta your render so keep up the good work. Hopeully you'll be able to get more outta those eyes and eyelids you were having problems with. I'd like to see his eyes a little more like you said. Keep up the good work.
