So I'm working on unwrapping a lamp post and I was wondering what can I can with all of the tops and bottom faces of my inset cylinders like what I have colored in red. As you can see from the picture I have a few and I was wondering what the normal thing to do is. Would I just straighten them out like the rest of the cylinders or would I keep them circle shape and just put one on top of the other. Any pointers would be great.

Heres what i do as i get this alot on tank barrels (not saying its perfect but works for me)

1:Apply Unwrap UVW and selet the cylinder part with the ledges
2:In the Unwrap Parameters choose Cylinder (and if you want to keep its proportions the same as the actual model uncheck the normalise button)
3:Then move down parts of the UVs using Face sub-Objects (shown in red) to stretch out the ledges (Blue)
4: Watch out for texture distortion on the ledge
5: Job done, seamless texture down the cylinder/tank barrel/lamppost

Hope this helps

You know it looked easy and probably is but for some reason I get this weird offset on the cylinder and when I pull down the bottom set of polygons to straighten them out picture 3 happens. So this is what I do I hope this helps you help me.

1. Just apply a unwrap uvw to the cylinder.
2. I selected the whole object except for the top polygon. Picture 1
3. In the map partameters I hit the cylinder button with normalized unchecked. Picture 2
4. I then went into the edit uvw screen and face selected the bottom set of polys and pulled them down. Picture 3

So how can I get it so the cylinder is nice and even?

When you select the cylinder in the Unwrap make sure its bottom is aligne with the bottom of whatever your unwrapping and it should sort out your problem.

Failing that just select the offending polys and select Break from the tools menu then attach them back over where they you want them to go (I use edge select, select the edge on the main group and then Stitch (from tools menu)

I have Break and stitch on hot keys as I use them a lot

Blank - So I finally figured out how to fix that offset problem. I just rotated the bounding box around the cylinder and it straigthened everything out. Thanks again for all your help.
