CGTalk - Scatter Modifier

I have Max R3 and following a tutorial it talks about a 'scatter' modifier. Now ive looked in Max and my manuals and can not find any mention of this. Also ive looked on Gmax, and still cant find anything about it

Is a 'scatter modifier' new to Max R4 ? Is it called something else in R3 ? If not is there anyway to achieve the same effect in R3 ?

Scatter was a 3rd party plugin for Max prior to R4. You can find it at Peter Watje's website (http://www.max3dstuff.com). Mr. Watje has beefed it up considerably over the version that ships with Max4!

Seven, I am currently using 3D Studio MAX 3.1 and the Scatter modifier is not a plugin......

It can be found under the Create Panel > Compound Objects > Scatter. It will be greyed out unless u are currently selecting an object....so njoy it =)
