View Full Version : MGAC - 55 - The Cube Challenge
Clanker 03-05-2008, 11:45 PM http://img151.imageshack.us/img151/6598/mgacposterdacubeqv7.jpg
This subject has already been treated in MGAC, but I find it pretty cool. (I just can't find the damn link. Any way to access old archives ?)
Since I'm a bit frustrated to never have time for texturing, the model for everyone is... a simple CUBE (12 tris, don't pass too much time on it :p)
So...
Your mission is to make an object ! (existing or not)
For example in past challenge, I've seen, a book, a cool backpack, but i could be a vehicle, an alien spacecraft, a building, a character... Try to make something more creative than a crate :wise: ( except if it's a really cool crate :p)
Specs :
Tris budget : a simple cube primitive
Texture budget : maximum 512*512 of whatever you want (1*512 color + 1*512 normal map, etc...)
You can also use one big map, or 6*32 textures (or any combinations) if you want to do some asset for DS .
Guidelines :
You must provide a viewport screenshot with texture(s), and post the texture(s).
Optional : a little turnaround.
Deadline :
Thursday 13th March 2008 11.59pm GMT
Bon courage à tous !

Hi.... on my way home from work I though up something fun to do with this assignment... it's gonna be more playing with stuff then only texturing a box.
But just to be sure (i'm gonna do it anyway) it is okay if I play with the length and breadth values, yes? I mean as long as it is 6 sides squarish... it doesn't have to be a perfect cube right?
Anyway I have to finish it tonight or it won't get finished... so later y'all!

hum...
No I meaned a perfect cube, cause I think it's more work to imagine something fitting in it and imo, it's a more interesting (and harder) research. The object could be cartoonish, or stylised...
(my "portal cube companion" was not a very good example actually, pretty basic. I 've just made it for fun and re-up the thread :p)

I got an idea ,how about an amplifier ? I really don't have any patience left to make one so anyone that wants can go ahead and make it !

Just so I understood it right, you said we could have multiple 512x512 maps right? (diffuse, spec, etc etc - each 512x512?) If so, then...
I made a gamecube. That's the first thing I thought of when I read 'cube'. Though the actual thing isn't a perfect cube, I made it one anyway. I really didn't spend too much time on this because I was at work, supposed to be doing work...but not. So it's kind of sloppy in areas (you'll see in the normal), and I won't/don't have time to clean them up. Just wanted to participate. My first challenge. So this is final for me.
The one thing I forgot to do is take a 'viewport' screen and a wireframe. But it's just a cube..

Hey cow1787
Nice entry !
Yeah you could have multiple 512 maps, so you did right.
I love the fact that objects have to be deformed to fit a cube, it made them a bit cartoonish.

Thanks. I've added the viewport shots with a wire just to follow the rules. Pretty sure I have more than enough images to prove that it's just a cube, haha.

And the winner is...
suspense...

Your work is good, perhaps not so imaginative, but well done :)
(Maybe my subject was ininteresting  )
So it's up to you for the next challenge.

Nice challange ,the only problem with it is that it's very linear ,I hope the next one will give me a little more room for the imagination !

Over a month later and i'm not seeing any MGAC 56. Cow1787 seems to have left the building.
Any takers? (I'll make a new one myself if no one else wants to)

I say go for it.
You could PM cow1787... to see if he wants the honors, but honestly I think it better to just make a new one. Or if you don't have any ideas, I think I have a brainstorm file lying around here somewhere from last time when I had to think up a Challenge...

i think that he might having too much work, i left the 3d scene last year because of that too...
I also think that the people here is loosing the interest on mgac due to the short time to complete the requests....

Well actually I think everybody doing some kind of gameart was (is) really busy with the Dominance War III.
And if I may say so last challenge was kinda hard... since you had so little room to play with... more like a texture challenge then an actual modelling challenge.
So those two factors would explain, for me at least, the low interest.
But start it up again, I am sure people will join if it is a nice challenge I am sure I will do my best to make some free time.

hey mates !
Yeah the precedent challenge was on texturing, but that's part of the job too. I'm sorry it hadn't had success. If someone has a cool idea, I'll enjoy spend a bit of my time on it.

I have a couple topic ideas that could work out pretty well without beging too time consuming. I'll put a thread together in a couple hours when I'm done with work.

I haven't seen a "MGAC--chairs" thread yet...
Or "Pets"
How about sports equipment?
Or gadgets (phones, computers, radios)
Or "derelict/abandoned"
...looking forward to getting back in the game with MGAC :D

Okay, I've gone ahead and made the new thread --
MGAC - 56 - Inedible Food! (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=39&t=622643)
I tried to keep it more in tune with the idea of a micro challenge -- the tri budget is only 200 polygons and the texture limit is 256x256 per map type.
