A painting ive been working on trying to emulate M.C. Eschers style. Just want to know what other people think of it. I still have alot of cleaning up of the line work to do. I also want to do something different with the backround, but I'm not quite sure what yet.

What makes the Escher so good, is that it is a recognizable object, a head, unwound like an apple peel.

This is a nice piece, but it isn't anything. It's not an apple, it's not a head, it's not a carton of milk being peeled, it's not even a passable ribbon curl, although with some color or grain it might pass for such. It's just a curvy drawing reminiscent of Escher in a vague manner.

I think it somewhat resembles an ear of corn...Perhaps you could play up the contour lines and the shape to better emphasize that.

The background, while important, is secondary to the main subject. Since your focal point does not have much in the way of recognizability or form to it, I would suggest minimizing the background to better try to keep the viewer's attention on the curl.

It is sopused to be two hands. I thought that read preaty well, but I guess not.

Thank you

Ah... I can see the two hands now that you said something and when I zoom out on it. I don't know if people will get it, though, without giving a hint. Maybe if you had the ribbons closer together? Or simply had more ribbons? I think it's the large gaps that is making it hard to see what it is. Also, the two hands in prayer seems like a very challenging subject for this sort of "ribbon reveal" effect but that doesn't mean you can't make it work. :)

A ha! That explains the weird black lines.

It's still a heck of a stretch to see the two hands, though, even with your explanation. I think kadubayoo is on point about the large gaps, but the contour is also very wonky, with extra waves and loops where there shouldn't be any on the LH side. It looks like the ring finger has two fingernails...Also near the bottom, where it just looks really "lumpy."

Did you draw out the two hands before you started to "ribbonize" them? If not, I'd suggest you back up to that point, and make sure the basic hands are recognizably rendered. Then the ribbon will be more effective.

Thank you very much for the cratiques. I think I'll try to get the ribbons closer together, and I see what your saying about the bottom being lumpy.
