View Full Version : What does everyone do for a living?
squidinc 05-05-2003, 01:33 PM Ok so this is another silly one like the "how old are you" thread, but hey I wanna know more about the people I share this forum with :), so what do you lot do for a living? :D :bounce:

I'm a PhD research scientist working in the Atlanta, GA area. I work for a Fortune 100 company, and so I spend most of my time doing lab research (when I'm not sucked into the endless stream of meetings around here).
Luckily, I get to do rendering and CG as a sidelight to my work - senior management loves fancy graphics, and C4D gives me a huge advantage over the competition.

Was: an art director/illustrator/designer/animator for a science/medical graphics studio for 9 years.
Now: Have my own business as a freelance illustrator and animator. At the moment: doing science / medical and pharmaceutical animation as well as illustration for textbooks and magazines.
Shotcomings: Spend WAAY too much time in these forums instead of doing my job--I'm just addicted to distraction. :p

Im a PhD student working in the a medical research field (virology) in Stockholm, Sweden. When Im not working on my thesis Im either using C4D or buying more software/plugins. It sure is an expensive hobby sometimes :insane:
It's nice to see a fellow researcher (kevin_mcgrath) who's also into 3D....does it also help you to keep sane?

I'm a freelance cameraman/editor. I shoot and edit news, documentaries, entertainment, or whatever someone wants me to shoot. As long as they pay my day rate, I'll shoot it. My wife is a reseacher/production coordinator, and we frequently work together. I live in an apartment in New York City near the United Nations. The only thing I don't like about it is we aren't allowed to have a dog. :( Fascist landlords!
I spend most of my time doing 3D and making my 3D film, which I very much enjoy. It's hard finding freelance 3D work that pays as well as shooting, though it happens once in a blue moon. I used to work for CNN in Tokyo, and then a Japanese TV station after that. The thought of ever working for another big corporation doing the 9 to 5 thing just doesn't work for me, even though I enjoyed it for a few years.

I'm an illustrator working in the comic book world. I've been drawing comics for about 9 years with a 2 year break spent at a Dot Com. I'm back to comic book work these days. Most of the stuff I've done has been for DC COMICS on Detective comics and Green Arrow.
3D is a hobby for me these days. Hope to have time to do more of it. I was fortunate that the creative director at the dot com i worked at had maya and lightwave on his computer. He was once the head of a visual effect company in south america. He let me play with the programs! Billable hours on 3D training!!

Full-time husband and proud poppa of a 17 month old girl. Also mechanical engineer in Atlanta, GA, USA. Most of our work is cleaning up waste industrial gases, and we get to work with some exotics, pentaboranes, fluorines, uranium hexafluoride, etc. Check our website at Integrated Environmental Services (http://www.iescylinders.com). I do my 3d design in Solidworks and I have done a few product and site animations for sales and proposal purposes. Talked my boss into getting me C4D to improve the quality of our work, but I haven't been able to produce a vid with it yet, as I'm finishing a large fab project that just won't f***ing die! Previous animations were done with IPA, a Solidworks add-on, and Premiere. But that software was so primitive that learning C4D is like starting from scratch. Love it!!
I aspire to be an freelance industrial product animator. Nothing communicates a product (esp. automation) quite like a 3d vid of it. Anyone else do anything like that??

Also an Imax projectionist where I watch matrix reloaded minimum once a day while banging my head against a wall.
Also trying doing some other freelancing occasionally
I taught 5-10 yr olds various computer skills at a primary school for 7 years before leaving to do a digital media production course for a year.
I am currently semi freelancing as a multimedia cd producer for a small community college until September, and after that....who knows.
Among all this i've been teaching myself as much about 3D as i can with an aim to someday getting work in the 3D industry :)
I use to work as a freelance graphic designer for a small newspaper and I had also worked as a graphic interface designer for a HVAC company as well as several other GD jobs. I moved down to Southern California and am finding it impossible to find graphic design jobs that don't want someone to be a guru.
I work in produciton for a major newspaper supporting the graphic artists here. It's boring as hell though.
It's going to get depressing when the people start posting with like "yeah I work at ILM/Pixar/WETA"

I am a student with computer science just behind me. This fall the plan is either electrical engineering, computer technology or mechatronics. I decide on which after the first year.
My plan is to work freelance with graphics, beside a future as electrician/comp. engineer. If i ever get good enough and/or get the opportunity full time graphic artist would be my dream. But as i gathered its a turbulent job market.

sheesh, makes my job in a video store look down right pedestrian. I also make and sell Poser stuff (is poser a dirty word here?)
I've always said I'd never want to do 3d as a proffesion cause then I'd have to get a new hobby
Poser isnt a dirty word here. I mean I think we all would love to make some money off selling poser stuff. I know I wouldnt mind the extra spare change from renderosity.
