Hi,

I thought "why not posting my current project ?",
so here it is. Its a wizard I want to use in a little
animation. The picture presents the current state
after one night modelling. I hope you like it.

I attached the sketches too.

I appreciate every comment.

best regards, Bob

schnoze is slang for nose.

however i think I must be the only person in history to actually try and spell it.

so that might have confused you.

sha'nahze should be close to the correct pronuncitaion.

yes the sketches looking boring because I don't
want emotion in sketches. they are simply modelling
references and so I keep them neutral. look at the
clay models of great films like Toystory or Ice Age
they are very emotionless. I give him emotions
when the 3D model is ready.

For the story behind: he is an cosy old man - not a
Gandalf the Grey at all. his name is Toldor of the Woods
and he is on friendly terms with all living things.
he is also a little clumsy and forgetful. my further plans
are to give him an owl as companion.

wow!

my little crit tickled out a lot of info out of you.

I like friendly stories so I realy looking forward how he and his owl will devlope.

I think for the scenery you´ll have to think abbout the backround a lot.
The wizzards house, the woods etc allways needs a lot of details

Me, I´m just thinking abbout the settup of a suburban night scene for a robbery animation, and I decided to work a lot with mostly painted backrounds and non moving (or hardly) camera ...:wavey:

first of all I thank all of you for your commentaries.
Its a good feeling to get some positive feedback.
some negative critique is always welcome.

hi mimo,

thanks for your critique I need that even the bad ones.
for the wizards house - he has no house just a little
shelter delved into the slope of a rock.

the wood will be hard work I guess. I don't plan long
wanderings through the woods, but little adventures
like cooking, fishing and collecting herbs and fruits.
If all is going well the animations will be shot at small
scenes - just for fun.

Just checked out the updated image, looks even better.
The eyes and eye lids blend in much better to the rest of the face now. great work on the beard and moustach (i'm sure I spelled that wrong...)
Can't wait to see the rest of him.

Now for round three. I tweaked alot and came up
with I think pretty good result. The eyes are rebuild.
I added eyebrows and some materials. So now the
head is almost ready and I can begin with details
like the teeth.

Looks good. I agree with you about the emotion. Now that he is textured even in this static pose he is starting to get personality.

Is there a slight seem down the middle of the beard?

Yep there is a seam. I will fix it later when I make the body.
The beard is a mirrored LoftNURBS and don't want to change
it to a polymesh at this state. I found out if I mirror (Symmetry)
LoftNURBS I get weird seams. So I will fix it when I have
changed it to a Polymesh - that will be after creating the chest.

one step further...

I have begun with modeling the body. He wears
now a robe. It isn't ready yet but I thought I show
you the style of his clothes. Maybe I will add also a
hooded cape. A belt is also planed.

After hours modeling I can tell you modeling clothes
is a tough job.

ohh a few quick tips.

1. to have some fun. create a polygon object, object menu-polygon object. tis creates an empty polygon.

2. go to points mode and right clickthen select add points, add a few then hit the "b" key and play with your points.

pretty soon you will be point modeling like a pro in C4D.

ohh and n the object manager right click and then add a phongtag to your polygon object. or you will get a nasty looking mesh.

go on, go on, don't stop talking... I love such comments :)

I am really aware of the seam and I will fix it after creating
the clothes. The beard is currently a mirrored LoftNURBS
and this gives sometimes weird seams. I guess the splines
on the symmetry axis are doubled.

Hi JIII,

the whole figure has:

24047 Points
27556 Polys

the beard has:
4620 Points
4416 Polys

the polygon-bummer is the belt:
14121 Points
18752 Polys

Bob

27556 Polys - when in HN - right?!

Anyway - looks really nice, Bob! A little Disneyesque and friendly - which are both great attributes. A little crit: I think the fabric needs some more volume - very thin - although the textures sugest it´s made out of some heavy material. Make thicker could help you here. The hands are a tad to realistic compared to the face imo.
Keep it up!

...... and give the poor man some feet!

Hi Pit,

There are really that many polys - the belt makes it

For the hands I think you are right. I wanted them

Hi flingster,

No problem with your slang at all - it is funny
to read.

For the amount of polys - the belt and the beard
are the only high-poly objects. Without them the
whole character has ca. 5000 polys. The shoe
for example has only 108 polys.

Long time no update. But today I have begun to pose
the wizard. I don't think I will make an animation - the
clothes are very heavy to handle. So here it is:

critiques and comments are always very appreciated.

have fun, Bob

Thats very very cool Bob

Just 2 crits...small ones - :)

Make his robe a light tan color or grey, and make his staff have some bends in the shape of its length. The tan will go well with the sky because of the complimentary colours.

thank you kiwi. After long I found it was time to develope
this character further. Here again a little update and maybe
the final image.

I want that it looks like the covers of old paperbacks for kids.

good work as always bobster...only comment would be, would like to see a bit more of the pouch and belt...seeing as you did so much work on it...reminds me more of one of the three kings than a wizard...has an almost christmas feel to it...like it though.
