Title: Visualisation - Rail Upgrade
Name: Michael Gardiner
Country: Australia
Software: 3ds max, After Effects, mental ray

A shot from a visualisation of a new rail upgrade in South-East Queensland. The total visualisation runs for about three minutes, this is the opening shot.

I don't normally submit these into the gallery as they are more functional than artistic, but I figured that any critiques will be good for me, so fire away.

better use real model for the sand, that might means a lot of face, but reality is created this way.

Thanks for the comment. Unfortunately this was a work project that had a tight deadline, so I couldn't spend too much time on the small details.

It was less a 'limited by your imagination' job and more a 'limited by your budget and time constraints' job and I guess it shows.

Having said that, I'm always trying to improve myself, so maybe next time I'll try and find the time for a bit of extra modelling here and there to improve realism.

I can see your point with the tight time constraints and budgets, also the fact that this is animation so most of it is just for effect but the one thing that jumps out is the fact the track looks like it's round not square ?

Good work though, keep posting on here !

Thanks for the comment, I think I just uniformly smoothed the entire rail\ballast object. In future I will make sure to leave the steel more angular.

Its funny that I didn't notice it much before, but now you've pointed it out its very obvious.
