View Full Version : Web Critique.... Almost out of Beta test
ExodusMaximus 05-05-2003, 04:59 AM Ok here it goes (and as always, your crit is greatly appreciated)
The whole site is Dynamic, of course, it runs on Cold Fusion/Java Back-End backed by SQL2000 100% admin controlled.
I did 100% programming, and about 90% layout design.
Site is going prod on the 10-th, thanks for input
http://www.voidstudios.net
I also did http://www.mayatraining.net
I think I will finally take the perm position with this guys - they are the ones who I did that anime plug-in for etc. I did work for them now for about 2 years...
CYA - rip it out - please...

I like the colors and it's easy to navigate. Just one thing I find a little odd is that it's a art/graphics site, but the layout is limited to 800x600. Just think it leaves too much empty screen space at higher resolutions which most people doing CG are running.
I'm just starting to learn web programming myself and wanted to ask you the reasons you chose Cold Fusion instead of php or asp?
One last thing:) The fractal type image at the top....I don't know...I don't like it hehe...I guess you could find a more interesting image for that space, or maybe rotate several images.

Hey,
You are right about 800X600 res.. but guess what? To change the site’s layout I have to change 3 files only! fusebox is so cool...
Why Cold Fusion VS. PHP ASP? Preference - they are all similar, but cold fusion makes life easier by combining a functions into tags - sort of markup language - but the idea behind is the same - just syntax is different - I came fro C background so all the stuff is the same for me: CF, PHP, ASP, Web-sphere etc.
Company (Void Studios is already preparing for the new UI for the site - 6 mo. and it will be changed.
Fractal image - hehe - the reason I used (BTW, all images on the site are original) It was my old fractal image - oh maybe 4 year old, I throw it in - and it stuck - the artists from Void are talking to a legal dept. about what image/s can replace this one - official site release is on 5-10-2003
Thanks for input...
I can answer any CF related questions - oh learn FuseBox - PHP is on it too this days..

Ok, Thanks for all the input... Strange think is that all the input came from the “new members”, are all the "Real Pro's" to busy to say a think or two about it, or is "this kind of stuff" below you guys? heh... Anyway
Thanks for all the valuable input

Looks good. Coming from a CF background myself, I can appreciate the time it takes to put these things together. :) Did you build a nice back-end management system, or are you using some quick tools to update the db and site stuff? I know that for all my work things, I had to make nice back-ends, but for all my personal stuff, I'll throw together a sloppy management tool since I'm the only one using it. :) Again, looks nice, clean, and easy to manage.
Nocturn: As far as the res of the site, you're still supposed to build for a resolution of 800x600 based on the 'average' user. Not everyone uses extreme resolutions as many of us do. And making a scaleable site gets messy, especially if you have a design such as this. It's just easier and consistent to all viewers to make it one size.

Hello,
Thanks for the complements...
It's all managed via the back-end application I made...
Security is a really great part, It allows me to give not only user access to the each section - lets say 'Content Admin', but it also allows me to tailor the allowed actions for this Section - let's say you can only add or view the content, but updates, deletes and approvals will need to be done by someone with adequate privileges.... Everything is controlled via it and it's easy... but that was a big chunk of work....Content, navigation etc are pulled from Views and updates are done from stored procs. I use to work full time for AT&T Labs as C/C++, Java DB2 Oracle developer, then We started to do some CF and ASP and then That's all I did = but my true passion was always 3D and Animation - I think I will accept the Technical Directors position with Void - we are in the salary negotiations stages
Thanks for the input..

Overall, I'd say it's a nice piece of work.
Obviously we can't critique the backend application since we don't have the access priviledges.
I wouldn't particularly want to look at it on 56k though, as it seems a bit image intensive (although that's symptomatic of many sites, now).
One thing I would do is pad out the table cells containing text in the gallery section a bit, the text is touching (or almost) the cell borders.
On a side note, this isn't really the place to post a web site if you're serious about having it critiqued. Bumping the thread wont change the fact that this is primarily a gfx board and most people wont really pay a thread like this too much attention.
Good luck in the future
