Whats the point of having an ambient colour on a material that isnt the same as the materials diffuse colour?

I rarely do, but remember, the ambient is the light or color of the "atmosphere", so if you have a room lit by blue light and your object is the color red., the true ambient color would be a shade of blue while the diffuse would be red. At least that is how I understand it.

Yeah, thats how I understand it too. I almost always have the same ambient and diffuse and use ambient only lights. Maybe the option to change the ambient colour of materials is for if you dont use ambient only lights or if you wanna create some goofy effects?
