Hey, well this is my first post in the comp!

Laid up a page of development ideas, I jumped right in with an early sketch and did some painting straight off because it's been so long since i did any painting or posted anything. on the forums :(

just getting familiar with how this stuff works again :)

http://www.freefallgraphics.com/forums/post1.jpg

The idea is that the clericon have been developing an ability over generations to transcend traditional modes of thought and to mould and shape the world around them with mere thoughts by using the rare and mystical throwns on which they are seated. Physically they are practically in a vegitative state, spoilt and worshipped, offered sacrifices and pampered by the fearful society that operates beneath them.

Only the purest and most beautiful females are allowed near the clericons, for so much power comes at a price, and the Geisha-like sacrifices are sucked of life within days to feed the Clericon's insatiable appetite for life-force, that, through their throwns is used up at an astronomical rate.

The thrown's on which they sit are older than time itself, created by a race beyond comprehension. Even the clericon do not know who built them, only that they are scattered throughout the known universe and give off such immense radiation that using them for the purpose of enhanced mental states physically mutates the clericon almost beyond recognition. The crippling state can be endured as the Clericon transcend themselves above the physical constraints of this world in order to break through dimensions and alter time and space as much as their rapidl developing minds can take!

My final piece will be 2D, but while developing the design and composition I am using the most efficient and creative workflow that I know of to get the quickest and best results. A combination of 2d sketching, digital painting sculpting and 3d design. I am especially excited about utilising zbrush to get the most flexibility out of the character design stages!

Critique is always welcome, so please leave a comment!

thanks in advance,

best,
Mike

Very special and interesting concept. But if this should be a playable character, do you think it would be fun to play? You drawing skills are great

Hey Martin,

thanks! Um, i wasn't really thinking about him as a playable character, more as an anchoring plot character and also for his potential as a great protagonist and also as a potential boss character (been playing portal, so the idea of this guy being able to rip apart dimensions as the character tries to defeat him would be cool)

I will definitely think about that though, to create a more rounded character, it didn't cross my mind http://forums.cgsociety.org/images/icons/icon11.gif

cheers!

Hey,

started using painter (wow) thought i'd post a little work in progress, so that i've got a good selection of development stuff up.

http://www.freefallgraphics.com/forums/head_on1.jpg

just an idea for composition and also starting to develop the design a little!

Please critique,
Mike

Very impressive work, mate! I love your thumb sketches, and the way you're developing this. As a playable char, he could be a bit strange, but as a powerful boss, it would work perfectly. I like very much the overall silhouette and the illumination you're doing. Kepp it up, I'm following.

BTW, please post smaller images, I can't see the entire figure at my screen at once, so it's harder to make considerations and criticize.

hey dude,

thanks very much.

going for the power boss route (bad guys are way more fun) :)

i've changed the size of the images, so they should be a little more manageavle ;) (just got a widescreen pc so i've forgotten about clipping on browsers)

thanks,
Mike

He sure looks fat and mighty sitting there. I think he could be a nasty end-of-level boss. No visible weapons, but I'm sure he has some surprises

Hey dude! Very cool concept, i have a facination for drawing fat thingys myself :).. I thought of one thing, the throne.. It doesnt look like its hovering with magic.. it looks way too hightech in my eyes. :/ Other than that, good work! Keep it up!

Good luck!

another update.... about to take the riff file into photoshop with layers, i want to make the use of some of photoshops brushes and increased control, but im expecting to come across some problems, mainly to do with layers and also im not sure if adding new layers of paint that doesn't flow like the painter brushes will disrupt the flow of the whole image! oh well, gotta try it!

http://www.freefallgraphics.com/forums/head_on4.jpg

hopefully all will go well!

One thing: Do you plan to add more colors? I don't think I like that pink palette.

MikeHill
03-05-2008, 09:10 AM
Martin: hehe. i actually quite like it in a wierd sort of way. lol. don't worry, will be tweaking colour levels etc, im just gonna wait till all the painter stuff is out of the way and do it all at once in p.s so the changes are consistent across the whole thing! :) gonna go for a more deep red!

Nendo 3d: cheers dude!

frozzt: yeh, definitely, i was worried it was looking high tech! My rendering technique isn't hitting the spot, the areas look a lot like metal, but im trying to get a marble-like altar feel for the final piece, so hopefully with detail it won't look high tech!

Alex Novo: you're too kind lol

spent a couple of hours playin with the hand design. this one is ok, but its not the design im after, want to stretch out the hands a little and make them a little more creepy and deformed. Its a start though, so im probably going to develop them a little more by making a quick mesh in zbrush!

I was especially pleased with the prayer beads as a design point!

critique welcomed!

The beads are a touch of genius only one thing is how are you going to get it noticed next to such a massive figure?

if u think about it it hes doesn't realy need to. its such a good idea but the main aim is the character rather than the beads imo. but thats not to say that it can be used in a hidden way. one of them small things that u don't notice unless u look realy hard. thats the kind of detail i love.

The amount (or the discussion) of details is important. You have to ask yourself, how should my character be presented? Is it only for presentation stills/turntables? Or do you aim at seing it inside a game environment/situation? And is this situation an action packed one, where you just run around shooting and hacking until everything blows up in blood? We are not going to make any environment or game design here, but it could be a good idea to take it into consideration :)

well, im gonna stop working on it now, cos im getting pinned in to working on just one concept. gonna start developing the chair design tomorrow!

cheers for your comments!

Martin, yeh I'm really trying to consider all your points, I really want to flood the image with a depth of design elements that are only noticed when looked at closely that tell a story.

I'm developing that story as I go right now, with each new feature I get a feel foe how the character is going to pan out!

nendo_3d: I know what you mean, but for me, the beads (not necessarily the cgsociety logo as a pendant) tell a good story in themselves and give a side to the character thats not the typical weapon wielding dude.

Willyam: yeh, that hadn't crossed my mind till you pointed it out, but yeh, blatantly. also theres some heavy duty jabba the hutt influence, that i hadn't intended or noticed, but its in there. All that subconcious influence goin on :)

Here's my latest set of sketches.... going to model the hands now, to start exploring form!

Very nice drawings!:) I can actually picture an in-game cinematic with a close-up of the hand as an intro shot of your character now :)

It's all sh*t. You're sh*t. if I knew you I'd take a s*it in your mouth you w*nker. I've seen better painting skills from my arthritic grandad you pathetic piece of sh*t. I bet you use a PC you pussy - you probably couldn't even turn on a mac you f*cking retard. I can't even tell what that pile of w*nk is, i find it so offensive it's all just a smeary sh*te mess like someone's rubbed p*ssing vaseline on my eyes. I hate you.

hey,

started developing a mesh to use as a guide for the fat man design (dont worry, i know my entry is 2d, but i see this as the equivalent of getting reference, only im making it myself)

http://www.freefallgraphics.com/forums/fatman_1.jpg

The final piece will be completely 2D, this is just a 3d sketch to explore design! :)

using 3d in a piece of 2d concept is a trick that many artists have done before XD but am sure u already know that :P

love it

I'm so shocked! when I saw your work... this is so amazing!! I like the way you do the sketches, it's very systematic and productive, also clear on all of understanding about to get the concept of the character!

Great concept the 3d technique is great I've done it before but with clay, great for proportions and perspective maybe i'll try it on 3d, i know a little of z brush perhaps you have any tutorial? anyway your character is great he really looks like a boss and very wise on a twisted way,
