View Full Version : HMC #13 Louvre: Philopoemen
Sandking 03-01-2008, 11:03 PM It will be propably the worst entry... but what the fun is in making things you think you can handle? :]
Here goes Philopoemen!

More info about this guy here (http://www.louvre.fr/llv/oeuvres/detail_notice.jsp?CONTENT%3C%3Ecnt_id=10134198673225768&CURRENT_LLV_NOTICE%3C%3Ecnt_id=10134198673225768&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=9852723696500823&fromDept=false&baseIndex=5&bmLocale=en).
This will be rough for me since I'm no great modeller and haven't created any characters that would come even close to this... So - have faith :]
Modelling will be done in Blender !
p.s.
At first I wanted to take a shot at Neptune calming the waves or Messerschmidts Head sculpt, but I really like this guy here!

Ok, so I spent some time searching for reference photos and actually got Sarah's Simblet book Anatomy for Artists (which is great) and began some modelling. And since I never made any character for real I need to pay a bit of attention to what I'm doing.
Some snapshot of mesh I'm beginning with:

I want to model good character, then rig it and pose it after that make a copy and break it into parts for sculpting/normal baking. I hope I can handle that! ;)

Yeah, I know about that for sure! But keep in mind that sculpting is only in Blender since previous version or maybe one before that and thus isn't as robust as Mudbox or Zbrush. I could afford Zbrush, but I want to test Blender as well as my skills. And making a good piece inside only Blender will be a nice proof for efficiency of this app.

I didn't had much time this week and I feel like since it was my first try at character modelling/rigging I failed it. Nonetheless I'll try making it till the end.
I'm posting here some images of WIP. Face/head isn't supposed to resemble Philopoemen as in sculpture since half of his face is covered in beard which I'll add later. I realized that my reference image was made basing on some sort of abomination since hand was as long as to hips in resting position while it make in real a little above knee. That's why I had such problems in setting pose. Also I realized that I should have either start modelling it posed (as I was thinking before) or try to model minimalistic figure and then pose it because after I modelled my character (which wasn't full blown really before rig) rigging made me some problems (as seen on images). Also this pose isn't a simple one as I realized and thus I'm having some problems with it. Turning torso is a pain in the ass :] I think I'll try to pose it as best as I can and then smooth any errors I made.
And here are the images:

p.s.
This pose was a fast try - it's not final :P At 4 AM I didn't have much energy to make it till the end and it kept screwing and screwing and screwing....
