i saw someone once make a sphere move across the screen and he said he used keyframes. Kinda like Flash you set a keyframe then move your object and set the next keyframe in the several amount of frames to make its action. So what i want to know is how do you make a keyframe?

Do these tutorials and then you will know what a keyframe is...... (http://www.medialab.chalmers.se/tutorials/maya/Pages/tutorialLevel1.html)

you can do this in several ways. you can just press s, and it will set keys on all keyable channels (the ones you see in the channelbox). or press shift+W for keying translate, shift+E keying rotate or shift+r for scale. another way would be to right click on the channel you wanna key in the channelbox and select key selected

btw : i was really thinking about if i should answer this. come on people, this is not true. you guys never read the manuals ??? it's all explained so well in their. actually it's one of the best helpfiles i know from all software packages.

how to set keyframe is really something you can find out soooooooo damn easy.

Well its not a matter of reading the manuals...its like....these guys can afford to spend $7,000 on Maya Unlimited but cant cant figure out how to make a keyframe?Somethings not right about this...
I myself started with Truespace of which I payed a $100 3 years ago and then as I out grew these smaller apps I'm making my way up the ladder so to speak.....
Even if I had millions of dollars to throw away I would start with something simple at first....... but I guess thats me and the world is full of people who are differant.......I guess....

what if you're not animating keys, though?

what if I wanted to animate a watermellon?

would I have to set a watermellonframe?

Hold on....
Let me look at the manual......

Nope....nothing under "watermellonframe".......

This 3D stuff is hard stuff to decipher....
I guess I'm going to have to take some collage courses......"Watermellonframing 101 "

lol!

I like that...

On a slightly more serious note, is there a shortcut key for 'Key Selected'?

It always seems that it would be much easier to select the channels wanted and then hit a key, but then again, I am a bit of a shortcut key fan....

Also, in introduced a friend to Maya PLE - he's running a Mac, but has only got a 1-button mouse...

I was playing with it trying to figure out work-arounds. I got navigating sorted, as well as selecting components, but I could not figure out how to only key one channel.....

Any thoughts?

go to the animate mode, then to animate-->set key-->option box.

in there you can specify the "s" key to work with selected items in the channel box instead.

There is a lot of people out there who did not spend $7000 on MAYA. My animation teacher is like one of the richest people at my school. I just stole it from his desk, took it home then burnt it and returned it (i returned it because then he would feel like he spent all that money for nothing) plus i already had my copy so what was the big deal. I know if i asked him that he would say "NO, I SPENT $7,000 ON THIS, GO GET YOUR OWN!"

You realise that what you did is completely illegal, don't you? Not only should your teacher be pissed off because HE could get in trouble for you having a copy of HIS copy, but so should everyone else who spent 7,000 on the software. There's a reason the software costs money.. it's because it takes money to make it, distribute it, advertise it, etc. If you want to "learn" maya, you can get a copy for free by d/ling the PLE. if you want to use it w/out the watermark, then use the school's copy, or buy one at an educational discount. If you're planning on doing work with the software and getting paid, then pay for your own damn copy.

Kamiclone: not quite sure what to make of that.... Part of me says that you're joking.... But another part (worryingly) tells me that you're serious....

Jason: thanks for that! I've never set keys through the animate menu, just used shortcuts right from the beginning!

Wow, it's like watching gentle bruce banner turn into the hulk right before your eyes!!

Jason I attended your master class in San Antonio last summer and you were the coolest, most mild mannered guy. I now see the other spectrum of your passions - and I don't blame you one bit (especially given your history with said company) for your statement. I wholeheartedly agree.

Kamiclone, I hope you are kidding because you don't go blabbing about things you've done that are openly illegal. Especially to a community of people who work their butts off to make this industry an honest, true, and worthy place to invest their passions into. All I can say is watch what you say.
