Some of you may remember this- my half finished/abandoned entry for the LOTR Challenge.

I've decided to resume working on it again although the look has changed somewhat from the initial concept.

Looks great,

The only thing that may need to be looked at the is the width of the feet. they look a little to small from the front.
Can we see some wire of this guy.

Good luck with textures and rigging

Wow, this is a really nice piece of work. Really good attention to detail. You got the shape of a general orc head perfectly. I like your idea for the toes, and the general anatomy of the figure looks great, too. I'd love to see some more work on this guy :).

By the way, what's the link to the LOTR Challenge?

The latest update and a wireframe

http://www.insanepoly.com/temp/thauras_wire.jpg

BigRanS123, Dom- yeah, I think the feet is rather small too and need s to be bigger

R.L.M- I've also made some adjustment to the nips, but of the problem is probably the high specularity as well.

DoctorStopMo- its floating somewhere in the challenge archives. Sadly I've no idea where it is.

nice work
the only thing that bother me is the feet is to small for him

[EDIT] the torso is awesome man.... great work

dominicqwek
05-06-2003, 04:13 PM
nice mesh. is it better to rig your char in this pose or one with arms at 90 degrees? would be easier and faster to model it with arms at 90 degrees.. unless u have some reason for doing so?

DoctorStopMo
05-06-2003, 04:19 PM
I think I found the thread. Great wireframe, by the way. I like the little loincloth you gave him, and the skull was a nice touch. I didn't notice the feet being too small because I thought that was a perspective issue. Ah, but I'm still a noob, so what do I know? Out of curiosity, do you draw a reference image to get your proportions right? I'm rapidly becoming your biggest fan :D. Keep up the great work!

:applause: Love it man!:applause: Reminds me of stephen king's sleepwalkers

Will this be the extent of his clothing or will there be more? Can't wait to see some textures! Do you plan to animate?

schmu_20mol
05-06-2003, 05:41 PM
really good model...just one thing bothers me somewhat....i don't really know how a orc has to look like but imho his ears seem to be stayin away from the head too much:bounce:

Maximus Groff
05-06-2003, 06:26 PM
awesome! whats the weapon of choice ?

hum... can i suggest a weapon ? do a 2 blade like in warcraft3
the elf hero..

:airguitar Your anatomy is great! how many years u model ?

c ya!

insanepoly
05-06-2003, 10:31 PM
dom- Its easier to rig the fingers in a 90 degree pose. I generally use that when I plan for the model to have a great degree of arm and shoulder movements. It won't look perfect, but the model will be able to lift its arms over its head and also rest it by the side without much problem. The only downside is that the armpit tends to rise too high into the shoulder. A 45 degree pose will have a more natural looking armpit when the arms is by the side of the body, unfortunately its dosen't do too good when the character has to rise its arms over its head.

DoctorStopMo- if you follow the original thread, you'll have that I'll start with a concept sketch and than procedd to completely disregard it when I start modelling. I don't model on top of reference drawings, personally I prefer freestyle modelling and making stuff up as I go along.

Bryan Silva- yep, there'll be a lot more. Weapons, accessories and background, texturing and rigging. I hope to get everything done before they release Warcraft3- The Frozen Throne. Then everything goes out the window...

schmu_20mol- that came from using my own ears as a reference, my ears also stick out from my head:)

Maximus Groff- thanks, I haven't decided on what weapon yet. Being doing this seriously since 98.

Are you saying you're somehow affiliated with blizzard or something like that? :surprised
Awesome modellin, hope you'll get it textured in the near future.

LOL.:D
the hand is very affliated to blizzard's wc3 in terms of gameplay. Tks for the reply. So this elf killer of yours not gonna be animated with extreme postures i guess.

All the best dude. my last day on 12may, hope to get some stuff done too.

the arm band looks a lil too low dude. it should ride up to the armpit. Looking good.

Well, i've joined in the fun. at least thats a start. :D

Hickory

His feet are a little narrow for such a large guy. I would widen them to give him more support. I do like the 2 toes though. anatomy and everything else looks good.

Maximus Groff

:bounce: Whats going up for the upper torso???
just curious!

ah... :bounce: no bounce, no play!

insanepoly
05-11-2003, 04:41 PM
I started work on the texturing, progress is slow as there are tons of UVs to layout. So far no specularity maps yet.

http://www.insanepoly.com/temp/thauras_f.jpg

tyio- 3dsmax. The cloth is basically modelled. I looking into using reactor to animate it when everything is all rigged up.

dom- dude, its an arm band not an armpit band :)

Hickory2.5- its wider than in the first version, equal to the width of the hand actually.

Maximus Groff- I am probably gonna leave the upper torso as it is.

Lordrych
05-11-2003, 04:57 PM
Wow the texturing looks amazing, my question is do you want it to look like stone though? you might want to be careful with the bumping on that make sure it isn't to high the eyes are fantastic well done.

Looking good

Great muscles. He looks a bit dead/stone with such gray texture. Some veins(red ones maybe, there's a lot of gray ones) and bit of color variation should help. SSS? Detail: this war-paint on his forehead shouldn't be so perfectly vectorish;) Keep it up:thumbsup: :wip:

latest update:
http://www.insanepoly.com/temp/thauras_g.jpg

Lordrych- I've made some adjustments to the textures so that it loks more like skin now.

BigRanS123- yep, there's mirroring now, I'll break the symmetry once the textures are completed.

azazel- I pan to add some dirt maps to it once the textures are done, so everything still looks a little clean now.

Man you are a very talented individual. Only thing I would crit is the nipples seem to protrude out a bit much. Looking forward to seeing the progress on this one.

BlackZ

Hey, looking awesome, you might want to throw a little of your own shadows on the texture map show it give it a little more depth looking reall good, but the chest and body looks like it is missing somthing, see if you can throw a little more depth into it with the shadows like i said maybe some highlights where the pecks and the abs are. I liked the before pictures where there were harsher highlights on the face it gave it more of a dead feel to the character. But that is just my opinion, i didn't know if that was what you were going for.

Rych

dominicqwek
05-18-2003, 06:09 PM
about time. frozen throne not out yet eh? i feel the skin looks too greyscale, could consider adding a very light tinge of green over the vein areas and orange over the muscles. very very light...like 1% worth.

Looking good dude.

insanepoly
05-21-2003, 04:34 PM
http://www.insanepoly.com/temp/thauras_j.jpg

Lordrych- this is just a basic light setup for reference purposes, so everything looks kinda dull, it should look better with improved lighting.

dom- Frozen Throne should be out next month, so I think I should hurry up and finish this.

Maximus Groff
05-21-2003, 05:00 PM

IMHO you can add more contrast on the tribal specular i guess...

awesome.. can't wait to see him in a scene with a moody lightning ... that'll rock.
But you should REALLY reconsider the feet : the concept is great, but badly proportionned and anatomically incorrect. It gives your character a clumsy look. Looks like there's no metatarsal bones; maybe lengthen the feet, but still making him stand on his feet-fingers.

insanepoly
05-26-2003, 02:12 AM
Lordrych- using 3dsmax and CS4. I don't use any special methods and I do a lot of individual point weighting to get them to deform right.

CJcuervo- a lot of people seems to have issues with the feet, but I think its probabbly due more to the camera angle. Here's a better view of the size of the feet.

Definately a super cool character, but I'd seriously size up his feet. Alot. Not that it's neccesary... He would just look sooo much meaner and more dangerous then. Seems you could tweak the thighs too. The muscles on his thighs seem to be too little shifted/offset.

And there's something about his ears... I think they would look better if they went UP->OUT->UP from the head out, instead of going just OUT->UP, as they seem to do now. Badly explained, but I take it that you get my point...

I love his facial features, though!!And the texturing is very very nice!!!!

I must say that it was the real pleasure to see how this raw model become fully textured one :)

I would modify things or two, but it's already nearly perfect. Really good job, the hand. It'd be honor to shake your's hand :)
