View Full Version : How do I turn a plane into a hilly terrain?

Hi there,

I'm trying hard to learn 3d max, and I've just hit a brick wall again :P

I understand basic modelling techniques, but one thing i want to ask is

if I want to produce a "hilly terrain", for e.g. turn a flat plane into one with some simple hills etc, (just like the wallpaper image on your standard windows XP background - one with the hill) how would I approach modelling something like that?

Any help would be much appreciated!

Thanks

Depends on how detailed you want to take it.Displacement maps and paint deformation are two ways.

If you need displaced geoemetry, you can use a noise modifer or a displacement modifier.

eleborating on what everyone else has said...

you could achieve this in many ways:

1 - add a displace modifier to a plane, add a noise map (or smoke map for more detailed looking hills) in the map slot, set the strength up and what hills appear

2 - make a plane with many segments, add an edit mesh modifier, select a vertice where you want a hill, check soft selection and adjust the falloff to about how large you want the hill, then just move the vertice up. repeat for more hills

3 - make a plane with many segment, add an edit poly modifier, scroll down in the modify tab to 'paint deformation.' select push/pull, adjust brush size, and simply click on your plane to paint on hills

4 - you can also just add a 'noise modifier' ro a plane to acheive results like #1, just add strength on the Z axis

good luck

...and if you feel like going a step further than hills and decide to make a canyon (http://www.3d-palace.com/xenomorphic/education/images/canyon_screenshot32.jpg) take a look at this great tutorial (http://www.3d-palace.com/xenomorphic/education/doc_canyon.htm) that Pete Draper has made.

or another very simple way, turn on soft selection and move a vertex up on your plane and others should follow depending on the soft selections area of influence.

will work for Edit mesh/edit poly/ or Patch

I like the patch and soft selection solution.
