hi there,

i have to upgrade from 4.2 to 5.1 and i'm looking for a way to load my custom max 4.2 quad menus into max 5. apparently all of the menues are stored in the .mnu. so if i just load the old .mnu-file in max 5.1, i'm going to miss all the new standard menu entries and only get the max 4 menu options. is there a way of transfering only the quad-menu instead of everything without hand-editing the .mnu-files?

Have a look at the ".qop" files, these hold the quadM settings.

Cheers,

well thanks, but .qop-files only hold the quad-related settings for colors, fonts and so on. i was looking for a way to load the menu entries that are assigned to my quads without overwriting a max5 mnu with an older one (as that would require me to add all the new functionality by hand again and generates entires for obsolete max4-functions).

Try this:
1. Open up max 4.2
2. Go to the Customize menu.
3. Click Save Custom UI Scheme
4. Give your UI a unique name (such as "My_UI")
5. A new window called Custom Schemes will open. Make sure you check all the options (.cui, .kbd, .mnu, .qop, .clr)
6. Choose your Icon Type.
7. Click OK

Now go to your UI folder in the root 3dsmax4.2 directory and copy all the new UI files you created (example: My_UI.cui, My_UI.kbd, etc).
Paste the files into the UI folder in the root directory of 3dsmax5.
1. Next open 3dsmax5
2. Go to the Customize menu
3. Choose Load Custom UI Scheme
4. Choose the UI you created in max4 (example: My_UI.ui)
5. Your default UI should change to your custom UI

You may need to make some minor adjustments if your UI is especially customized, otherwise that should work for you.

Hope this helps.

Keep in mind that if you really tweaked your interface pre 5 you'll be missing some great features that are new to 5. Interface wise that is. You could always put them back.... but then how would you even know they were there?

I have a pretty crazy UI and I had to rebuild it from scratch with 5.

locutus: that was what i originally did and it led to the problem visualboo mentioned: with this action you overwrite all the default max5 menu entries and have to re-add them your self.

at first i tried to edit the mnu by hand but soon got annoyed. i've now made sure that i can work within the production pipeline with max4.2 thanks to bobo's BackFromFive script. go to hell version 5 :D (i currently don't need the new features anyway).

and yes, my quad-menu (and rest of UI, too) is heavily customized, it's simply not worth the time to set it up again.

i'm pretty pissed when comparing this hassle to upgrading maya user settings to a new version...
