View Full Version : DWIII - 2D - Marsyas - Chthonic Warlord
marsyas 02-29-2008, 12:28 AM Hi! :)
I want to do something non-humanoid so I'm aiming for a sorta Cthulhu-esque creature (perhaps it is in the service of Cthulhu... and CGSociety, of course). ;)
The dual weapons are giant 'yo-yo' blades, probably ice-enchanted. The person is just for scale.

Earlier sketches:

Basically, it's like a giant medieval tank! Inspired mostly by a chambered nautilus.
I should probably be experimenting with the design some more but I've been using this contest as an excuse to practice refining my sketches in Photoshop for the time being.

Did a color rough in Painter and Photoshop. I don't really know what colors to use on this critter. I might go for a very monotone look in the final image to give it a Lovecraftian feel.

Love the style of your work! I can’t wait to see the final concept! Thanks for sharing…

Zoey Freak: Thanks! :)

Here's a new design I played around with as well as a weak attempt at trying to pose the original design.
I wasn't too happy with the flexibility of the original design but I may still try to make it work.

i love the triangular shape that you can see in the side view. i like how clean the side and front look. i'm sure that both those good silhouettes will translate into 3d well...

blindsyte: Thanks! :) I wish I were doing 3D but all I know is high-poly.

I started a sorta 'King of the Hill' painting with my original design. Still have to clean up and polish a lot but I'll probably go ahead and finish this before I go back to my design sheets.

I think my perspective is probably a bit wonky... been eye-balling it mostly.
Thanks for looking!

The flying pose is very dynamic... The triangle composition is working to your advantage... I can feel the energy and movement... Thanks for sharing...
Ps
I'm also a huge fan of the Nautilus...

blindsyte: Thanks!
Alex Novo: Hehe, thanks! I'm regretting my decision though--non-humanoid is hard! Been dying to draw some arms and legs...
Zoey Freak: Thank you!
Betrayer: Thanks, Betrayer!

I've been struggling to make some new designs. Most are crap but I thought this little guy was kinda cute. He was inspired by Trilobites and has magical fishhead gauntlets. ;) He's pretty humanoid though...

I'm trying to find a balance between natural armor and worn armor. They just seem like monsters instead of warlords if they're not wearing armor.
Anyway, thanks for looking! All comments welcome.

Just more experimenting. I thought the highlighted one was kinda weird because it looks feminine.

Played around more with the 'tentacled woman'.
Unfortunately, it seems my designs tend to get 'cuter' the more I work on them. :P

Definitely very cool and interesting concepts you have going on so far. Can't wait to see more.
I loved the little "fishguy", but unfortunately he doesn't look like he can save the world in a great war. I also like the first one on the 03-08-2008 post, she looks so mysterious. I'm not that found of the mask-like heads on the latest post, but I think you should pick what you like.
Keep it up

Loukor: Thanks!
Rion411: Thank you!
eEe: Thanks, eEe! You're right, I need to make something 'meaner' or stronger looking. It's been a challenge!

This is just another take on the last few designs. I plan to play with this idea a bit more before moving on.

Hey, cool. You took a similar route as me, only I got to chtulu only through a process of refining the last few concepts. Keep going, maybey infer more humanoid overtones, its needs a reconisable head and some form of emotional display.
Great stuff sofar.
