Sorry about the subject name! this one is rigth!!!
I was not telling about my modeling because this is a tex/ligth/render challange but...
I modeled the head with the help of a friend, he modeled the head and i put the details on the model... this was for a TV comercial off a turkey thats talk, we erased the head off a real turkey and replaced for a CG one.
He was asking people to buy xmas cards for poor kids, as a last wish before he get killed for xmas dinner!!!

Parabéns mesmo... :applause: :applause: :applause: :applause: é legal a gente ver que tem brazucas que mandam realmente muito bem no 3d.

This is the turkey with subdivision, and final render, but i think i'll work a little on the ligth.
The skin on the neck, that i don't know the name in english... have 2 bump maps, 1 transparency map, and 1 translucent map, so the ligth could be able to show, like a thinny skin.

freaking aWsOme man so you are almost finished with the April chalange.
:p
He is really realistic but you already know that and it is needed for the comercial.
XY projection is that the program makes the texture 3D acording to the ligher and darker collors, right? Well I don't know I only think that this is it.

you should add some light "feathers" on it, with moderation to add more realism. I'ts an amazing texture work , but the silhouette still a little too sharp. good work!

oh.. I just saw your last post.. there is some.. huhuh my apologizes .. nothing to say now :P

 Luiz Adriano,

Wow! I am not the only brazillian here. This is great. So, do you still live in Brazil or are you living somewhere else? I am in Rio right now, but it seems I am going to move (hopefully) soon.

By the way, what 3D package are you using? I used to model in MAX but just recently moved to Maya (and I am loving it). Do you work with Advertisement (you mentioned something about commercials in one of your posts)? I am into it, so if you ever feel like exchanging some ideas, tell me.

Glad to meet you,
Fabio Bittar.

Turkeys are really horrible creatures... Great job :D Seriously tho, it looks almost like the real thing. The translucency will add a lot to it too. Keep it up! It's nearing completion :)

Nice work! wow! Could you please enlighten a pour beginning sap like me and tell me how you create those bump maps? I'v also seen a lot of textures applied to faces that seem to rise from the same process and wonder how do you do that?

Yes.. I've always wondered about that too... how in earth do you make those bump maps, diffuse maps, reflect maps, transparency maps, etc?

04-19-2002, 06:31 PM
Well i'll try to answer some questions rigth now!
NO HARM DONE TO ANY ANIMAL DURING THIS WORK!!!!!

I'm from Brazil, São Paulo city, and work for a finish house called Casablanca, we work mostly with tv commercials and some feature films.

I use Softimage XSI, for the turkey and i work with 3D for 10 years.

When I said that i used a XY projection I should have said that I have used a PLANAR projection.
And next i'll try to show how I do my bumps!!!
See ya guys!

Awesome!! :bounce:

outstanding work
some C&C:

i think the image looks too white, and shadows too black, it needs stronger colors..like:
http://www.ars.usda.gov/is/graphics/photos/jul98/k7043-16.jpg
<-- female turkey photo

something else that doesnt look quite right is the "nose", the hole in the peak, it should be a bit more open and the area around it not so popped out

and give the turkey a bit more fur :D

great work :)

LuizAdriano

We not always can use the bump from the map we're using for the color texture, cuz colors when in gray scale doesn't look the way they should for a good bump map or displacement.
The bump are done with the difrence on the luminance from the image, the diference between white and black and all the grays.

Like this table, look how each color works when turned into grayscale.

LuizAdriano
04-19-2002, 07:06 PM
Go to some paint software and select the color that you want to bump. the one you want hi like the red dots you paint white, then select the color you want low like the trinkleand paint black, and put then on a 50% grey back ground, you use only one map. less memory BUT you have less control on how much your bump will look. if you increase the bump, both, black and white 'll be increased, and if you want only one you'll have to get back to the paint software and start to work with grays.
If you use white on a black background, you have more control on the intesity of the bump, but you'll have to use more than one map, maybe lots off then for a good result and you'll need more memory.

LuizAdriano
04-19-2002, 07:15 PM
I hope i could help with this". i know that is not that simple.
But is something like that that i do for bump maps.
If some off you guys have more questions please ask and i'll try to be more especific.
There are lots off way to do the same thing with the same result.
There are no rigth or wrong, when you got the result you want!

c'mon man .. it MUST be a real picture !!! :applause: :applause: :applause:

LuizAdriano
04-19-2002, 09:40 PM
OH, Off course!!!
Real pictures arte the best for the texture, but you should work it first!
Remove some ligthing difrence from the patterns!
Mix some real pictures.
My color map from the turkey have at least 8 real pictures.
some for the white areas, some for the wrincles, some for the red dots, some for the red area, some for the face, some for the eyes.
All off that mix with lots off paintings, and clonnings.
Real pictures rules!
If you want to make good textures you should use real pictures but doesn't work fine if you just shot and aply! You should work on it to adapt to your model! In all directions from top to botton.

Hi Luiz, I too use Xsi and recently was told by someone at Soft that if you pipe an image into a bump map node in the rendertree
Xsi will convert the image to a scalar (this process is transparent to the user), and to do this it takes only the RED channel.
If this is true, using color bumpmaps (like u say) isn't going to make for a good image...

Sorry if i couldn't explain rigth what i did.
Is hard to make a point in a foreing language. LOL
But I don't use color maps for bumps, I use then to generate my grayscale for the bump.:D
But this red convertion from color when you convert color to scalar in XSI is new to me! Thanks for the tip!!!!

I love all turkey (look at my avatar ! ) and i especialy love yours !!! it's really great. But I think the only thing on its head that's not realistic is its eye. Can't explain why but it looks like plastic. Will you model the whole turkey or just the head ?

Keep it great !

05-12-2002, 08:41 PM
Really nice turkey, but I agree on the eye issue. Maybe try a higher glossiness setting and perhaps a vague bump map to its cornea (or whatever the transparent membrane on our eyes are called...)

Well people, i agree with the eyes, i think that is one off the most difficult things to do, to make an eye looks alive.
Thanks for the tips i`ll try the bump map on the eye and the glossynes!
I'll only model the head off the turkey, cuz we will change the head off a real one with the CG.

My avatar is a model off my head that i was modeling from some pictures off mine, and last month i enter the challenge modeling a demon from my face!:applause:
Was easier to start with a head already started, since i enter the challenge on the last week.So it should have bigger pictures on last month posts. I was unable to finished the entire model, cuz i didn't have the time, but i`ll some day soon i hope!
I`m trying to make me a site on the internet so i can post my works, and recive critics, but until then i`ll try to post then here.
A very good place to do it!
Lots off very talented people, with very good advices on all works!

You can choose Image, mode and grayscale...
It will return a message like "discard color information?"
you choose yes, than save it like a regular JPG, or any other picture type that you want.
I hope this is your problem, if not write me back and i`ll try to help you in the best way i can!

Umm there is a much easier way. You take your image and you go - Image/Adjust/Desaturate (or press Shitf+Ctrl+U). This makes it gray while keeping the image mode as RGB. :)

LuizAdriano
05-13-2002, 03:36 PM
That is true Leigh, but...
with an grayscale image you use much less memory, cuz the file is smaller than one with rgb data, if you`re using lots off maps this can make some diffrence on your final render.

leigh
05-13-2002, 03:41 PM
True, I normally don't care about file size / memory though
with my challenge character, I currently have 42 1500pixel x 1500pixel RGB images....

uhmm right but if i want to choose the selection made on color range and save it as a jpg how can i do
in ur example u show how a color picture of a turkey can be reduced to a grayscale with two different "weight". this happens using color range. instead of grayscale tha give me just a lost of rgb but on every color.
Am i enogh clear?
maybe no :shame:

I think i got it now....
Say u want to do a bump from the red area...
You select, "Select" color range, choose the area on your picture you want, change the fuzzines slider to reach all the area you want... leave selection preview in "none" so you can see the selection in white over black. hit ok.
You will have a selection on your picture.
Create a new layer fill it with white, on edit, fill...
turn off the selection with ctrl-d and create another layer...
put it beetween the color map and the white layer, and fill it with black. then you can flatten the image or "save as" the result.
and you will have a white over black picture off the selection u made.
I hope i got it now!
Otherwise, ask me again....
I`ll not quit until i get it:thumbsup:

Hey leigh wich software you use, and why you`re using such big pictures as maps?

DocBoom
05-14-2002, 01:44 PM
ok about that grayscale conversion...
i´ve got the german version of photoshop (version 6), so i don´t know if i got the correct names: in the menu choose "image" ("bild" in german, the third from left) then "adjust" ("einstellen", second from top) then "mix channels" ("kanalmixer", 11th from top).
In the dialog check "monochrome" on the bottom. Now use the four sliders to adjust the greyscale image. The top three set the weight of each of the three channels (red, green and blue), the last one is used to lighten or darken the whole image.
Then click ok and go to "mode - grayscale" to convert to true grayscale (for a smaller file size).
I found this very usefull for creating grayscale images from rgb, if "mode - grayscale" won´t give me the wanted results.

LuizAdriano - I use Lightwave. And the reason I use such large images is because the work I do is always for broadcast/film so I'm used to working hi-res, even for my own personal projects. That way when I add it to my showreel tape, it'll look good at 720x576 :)

Thanks for the mini tut, I have never used the channel mixer, and have done the same sorta thing manually, thatnks for the great time saver.

Personally this is the first super res project I have worked on, but I really enjoy it so I think I may do more of it Its fun and allows for extreme closeups and distant shots all in one.
