View Full Version : slice tool creating too many vertices...
moiremusic 02-27-2008, 10:49 PM Using Max 2008...
I've got an organic model that I'm prepping to go into Zbrush. I'm using the slice tool to add more resolution to the tail, and to make the polys more square-ish so Zbrush deals with them better. My problem is that when I go to slice one quad into two (or in my case, rather doubling row of quads), it adds in a lot of vertices, making each quad a large number of triangles... not good for Zbrush:

So how can I split these quads without ending up with all these extra vertices?

select your edges ring style and apply connect in the edge submenu.
this will create new edges (there is a dialogue for how many) giving the square-ish look that you wish

So you're saying to select the ring of new edges that have been formed by the slice tool? Where is the 'edge submenu'?

no no ....forget the slice tool.
I am talking about how to create the new edges without the unwanted vertices...
simply select the ring of the edges you wish to cut in half and click "connect"
edge submenu = edge mode (same thing)

mmmm, I don't agree. The slice tool should be working fine, I've never seen that behaviour before. Ok with finding other ways, but this doesn't solve the strange prob. Any other info about the file or model in order to pinpoint the causes?

The only thing I can think of is that you're working in editable mesh and you have the diagonal edges hidden.
Are you using editable mesh, or editable poly?

Reign's right! Now I rememebr that Max has a strange behaviour in edit mesh sometimes, esp the creation of additional vertices. use edit poly, seems to work better.
There also might be hidden edges, indeed.

Slicing in poly mode instead of editable mesh mode seems to work. That is a peculiar issue. Thanks, everybody!

Just curious, why are you using the Slice tool instead of edge-ring connect tool?(Or even quickslice)

Heh. Well, because I'm self-taught at Max and am not familiar with the edge-ring connect tool or quickslice. I presume from your question that those are better ways to solve my problem, so I'll be looking into those.

Aren't we all,my friend:)
Yeh,slice tool is fairly cumbersome.Select an edge>hit ring>hit connect.
this method will also preserve your edgeflow.(plus you can open the connect dialogue and preview your settings......add >1 edgeloop, slide edges.....etc.
play around with it,you'll wonder how you ever did without it:thumbsup:
Hey there :).
I would recommend you using always editable poly mode instead of editable mesh, as it has a much wider range of tools avaliable for editing it.

For the ulitmate to make your modeling life easy & fly:-
Get PolyBoost (FTW)
Add Polydraw_shiftloop_selection To your quad menu
Enter edge mode
Click to add loops. (Shift clicking will even conform it to you mesh shape!!)
Slice tool is god alwful been using Max since it's birth and never touched that thing.
ShortCut all you operations to keys or quad menus, it'll save you years on your life!
