View Full Version : Image with the model?
Goatfuzz 05-04-2003, 02:32 AM Is there a way to have an image of what you want to model right there to look at in Wings without having to minimize and flip through windows for reference? (Did that question make sense?) :argh:

i think all you have to do is right click and select image plane and then select the image...sadly i think it can only be like a bitmap...but i know jpg's and gif's don't work....i think....please correct me if i'm wrong...

Just wondering, are there constraints on the image file in question, such as a max allowed size or amount of colors or similar? I'm trying to make an image plane with several different images I've converted from gif and jpg with ACDSee, but Wings3D doesn't want to import them, it says "Unsupported format or bad bmp file" and similar for tga files. For the tif files I've tried it doesn't give an error but neither does it create an image plane =)
I've tried the three listed formats (bmp, tga, tif) with several different images and different options when converting the images (RLE compression or not etc.) but nothing seems to work. What am I missing? =)
It must be 24 or 32 bits per pixel, I havn't implemented 16 bit or palettes yet.

i have had no luck either. i managed to get an avatar size bmp on an image plane but it slows down the program real bad. if you have another program(i use 3d max or houdini) you can probably place a jpg on a plane and export it as a .obj or .rib file and it might work. i have not tried importing that way yet as i have just thought of it as i read the threads. let me know if you figure anything out. it would make wings my #1 modeller if i could set up referance .jpg's. its just too much fun that program!

Experiment with different size images (of the correct type, of course :) ) .......my system won't cope with anything bigger than 1024 by 1024
Whatever the limit - I think both pixel dimensions must be smaller than the relevant limit - ie in my case 2048 by 512 won't work.
I've not tried this in recent releases - but this is how it used to be :)

(If this is the case - use whatever is allowed and tile the pix in wgs)
Another quick note:
You can just have a basic image window open by selecting File->Import Image. It'll list the image in the Outliner, and then you can right click on it and select "Show." In which case you'll have a new window pop up with the image inside--it resizes with the window size.
Just another option :)

The 24-bit requirement was the key for me, I coulda sworn those pics were 24bit to start with but after some experimenting in photoshop I quickly figured out they weren't =) They were 8-bit, didn't even remember that bmp, tga and tif supported that low bitdepth too. Now at least importing them as tifs work
