This is my first DW and I don't have much experience with 3d game characters, so this is going to be interesting for sure :bounce: I have done some character concept drawings earlier, so I should be able to come up with some ideas.

I have made this little design document to better get an idea for my character. It is work in progress of course. :) Concept drawings follow later.

Name: Goliatus The Invoker

Time periode: Age of magic

Race: Mutant

Class: Invoker

This character type harvests powerful magic to destroy and/or manipulate his surroundings or enemies.

Artifact Weapon: Summoning

This character attacks its surroundings or enemies by summoning a serpent spirit from the weapon. Only one serpent can be summoned at a time. The weapon can be used in three ways:

1) As a long ranged weapon where the player shoots a serpent in a straight line against the enemy. The serpent causes damage, when it hits the target. The size of the serpent and its damage amount is set by the time the fire button is pressed.

2) As a mass destruction weapon where the serpent flies in the area around the character and causes great damage to everything in its path for a periode of time. This attack mode is triggered by keeping the fire button pressed until full magic power is reached.

3) As a sneak attack where the player temporary can take control of the serpent and direct it into an enemy. This attack mode is time limited. The main character is stationary and very vulnerable during this attack mode.

Strengths: Long ranged attacks. Great damage. Sneak tactics. Quick reflexes. Can "crawl" in difficult environments.

Weaknesses: Can't move at "running" speed and can't jump. Weak short ranged weapon causing it to be very weak in close combat. Can only "shock" opponents.

Backstory: Goliatus was once a human. Since as a child he had the ability to communicate with the spirits through his dreams, and one late night a spirit visited him and showed him a horrifying vision of the future. A future of war and terror! Every night since then the same spirit and vision haunted him over and over again. At last Goliatus begged the spirit to stop the haunting visions and leave him alone. The spirit replied, that only if Goliatus would allow his body and soul the merge with the spirit, he could stop the visions and change the future. Goliatus finally accepted his destiny and made the deal with the spirit. When the spirit took place in Goliatus, his body mutated into a strange creature, and they became one single mind. After this day Goliatus would leave everyone from his earlier life behind. But what Goliatus never realised was that he could never return again. Led by the spirits mind Goliatus was able to find the artifact that could release the spirits power into the real world. A new powerful soldier was born...

First quick concept. Still very early in the process and I need a weapon for him of course. I actually have a pretty neat idea for that :)

I also plan to add the serpent spirit in the concept and final 3d model.

Working with the weapon. I think the serpent should be summoned front the gems.

Hey martin!

cool looking dude, reckon it would be nice to really stress some anatomical features, maybe define some muscle-like formations in his tentacles and show off some harder specular areas where a little bone would pressing up against the skin in places (i.e the head could do with a little more definition of a skeletal framework!)

Best,
mike

Thanks :)

Oh yes. He's far from complete. Right now I'm thinking about either give him some kind of armor, or add some snake-like plates to his skin. The could have some snake appearance as well, but he should remain looking intelligent.

Nice work so far, Martin. He does look intelligent, as his face is mostly humanoid, but what still may be lacking is expression. It's hard to connect with a character whose face is so unreadable. Have you considered experimenting with making the brows heavier, adding more wrinkles, changing the mouth... or anything to give him more personality? I like your idea of adding scales or armor. It'd be nice to add some more visual interest along his body to break up the smooth skin.

Anyhow, good luck with it!

Thanks, champ :) Your feedback is mostly appreciated

I definitely plan to add much more facial expression to him, and I like your suggestions :)

I also plan to make more drawings showing head, hands, weapon etc. in close-up.

Unique, Simple and beautifull concept:). Center part of that staff, will it be glowing. Some more attitude, expression will look good.
All the best for this challenge:thumbsup:

Looks cool. You could leave the 'wireframe look' kind of regular, and have him do a move where a net secretes from his body and snares stuff! Would help his weakness in close combat, giving him a chance to get further away. It could be kinda related to his race too so it wouldn't be magical or mechanical or anything, almost like a spider spins a web, he disperses strong web like nets!Just a thought.

http://www.martin3d.dk/wip/concept04.jpg

I did some work on the skin, and I think it works better with the shells instead of the spiderweb-look. It also makes him look more robust against melee attacks. I'm not sure yet, whether I should continue the shells to his snake-legs, or add some variation with a different kind of skin. An idea I have is to add some sort of "story"-pattern on his back, that gives a hint of his fate.

MartinNielsen
03-03-2008, 11:19 PM
madshooter: Thanks :) I think the center part could be glowing, when its magic powers are released. Yes, he still needs some attitude

New head. I think it works much better with a more bad-ass attitude  I still need to make little visible connection between spirit and man. Some shared characteristics.

hmm, from an unattached perspective..i preffer the passive face to the mr nasty version..all it is more to do with the texturing of the passive version, being more natural and complimentary to the rest of the body and i find more interesting aswell.. early days no doubt..

of course its all down to personal taste here :),,just mho.

fantastic work regardless, especially the glowing colours against the dark

hey buddy!

nice update.
great to see some more facial characteristics on this dude. he looks more mean now. like he could really do some damage.
still not completely sure about those "scales". maybe they are too big?
where do you plan on putting the cgs logo?

Finally some feedback... Thank you everybody

MikeyH: Thanks :)

LightSovereign: Thanks :) Well, this guy is ready to go to war, and his expression must show that. When he has summond' the spirit, it means he's ready to do some damage. So I believe this face justifies the situation. But I really appreciate your opinion, it all helps

eMysfit: Thanks :) I don't know yet. I think I'll wait until everything else is set.

Ferx: Hey buddy :) Thanks for visiting

rasmusW: Thanks mate :) I actually like the idea of "skin"-armor, so I won't remove or change them that much. But maybe your right about the scale of them, especially on the snake-legs. The logo comes later, but the center chystal on the weapon could be a good spot

Loukor
03-09-2008, 10:21 PM
Wow this turned out awesome, great colors and his skin is just . Just a small critique, his eyes could be less slanted I think because it makes his head less attractive. Cheeers

walrus
03-09-2008, 10:42 PM
Nice work on the colors! I like the new face a lot more: The old one looked somewhat bored and confused, and the large gap between the nose and mouth made him look old. Not that old is bad, but the new one feels a lot more capable of handling a battle. Nice texture and lighting, too.

He looks much better with this "DW" expression on face. Personaly I miss more volume on his waist and hips. But you can consider to make this improvement on modeling part. Anyway, there goes an image showing how he looks with some extra pounds :)

jramauri: Thanks :) I won't change his muscular appearance at this time. I'll wait until I can see his proportions in full 3d, as you suggest  Remember he's not a short ranged fighter. His strength lies in the artifact.

MartinNielsen

http://www.martin3d.dk/wip/concept09.jpg

Just a few adjustments on his proportions and shells. I also tried finding a place for that damn logo, but I couldn't find any. It just seems out of place no matter what. And it sounds like I have to place it on the actual character - not the artifact as planned.

eMysfit
03-11-2008, 01:51 PM
I don't know for sure but I'd say you could place it on the artifact(the logo.)

It seems to me like it would be the same as like....putting it on a chestplate that the character is wearing. they're both items that the character is using so are kind of part of the character and having the insignia on them would be the character showing his loyalty to the forum.

That's the way I'd think anyway.

If you wanted to put it on him though, maybe you could give him a belt of some kind and put it on a buckle or something(could put some pouches on the belt or something if the belts purpose needs to come into play). Or for some extreme loyalty! haha...carve it into his chest and have it glowing.

But I would bet putting it on the artifact is perfectly fine too.

MartinNielsen

http://www.martin3d.dk/wip/concept10.jpg

Ok, I tried placing the logo in the center of the artifact, and I think it works. It also makes sense this way, because the logo kind of shows some serpent-like symbols. It is a great symbol of the powers the artifact contains.

I could also place a pattern like the logo on his back, symbolizing his blindness. How he's "marked" for life without "seing" it.

It looks good to me. I like the idea of the pattern on the back too. In actual game perspective this would work pretty good too. Would give teammates a good visual guide to not shoot you in the back and is a good way to add detail to the backside, which is often ignored by an artist. Then when it's put in a game its so plain that they have to go back and rethink it a little. After all when running around in a alot of games 90% of the time you're staring at your characters back haha.(3rd person games atleast.)

Maxter
03-12-2008, 08:01 PM
Nice creature design...just one thing, maybe the pattern in the torso, it could be a bit more irregular... I like the weapon too:thumbsup:

MartinNielsen
03-12-2008, 08:31 PM
eMysfit: Yes, you're right. Many artists seem to forget about the back of the playable character. And my character IS supposed to be seen i 3'rd person.

Finally a new update. :) I just had to play that great game "Mass Effect" through once more on the 360  , so it has been a bit quiet around here lately.

I wanted to get the artifact done before proceeding, and I think I nailed it pretty much. It really looks like I envisioned it, and the logo also fits well with the design. The glowing balls also have a purpose: They can "shock" the opponents in close battle, but they won't damage them permanently.

Time is also running out, and I have doubts that I can't finish everything in time  But what the hell... I take it as it comes.

It's all in the eyes... I just wanted a close-up of the eyes, 'cause they can tell so much about the character. I guess they aren't that important in this particular case, since you won't see them so much in close-up. The "lightning-eyes" is a visual connection to the lightning inside the artifact.

walrus
03-20-2008, 04:00 AM
Nice details on the eyes. I was surprsed by farazmobin's note because I could have sword you were in this as a 2D entry, not 3D. With the amount of detail you're putting into the painting, you're approaching it like a concept art entry, which is great. Good luck with the 3D, if that's what you're doing! :)

MartinNielsen
03-20-2008, 12:33 PM
farazmobin: Thanks :) I'll begin modelling now :wip: Weee...

walrus: Thanks, champ :) And yes, this is definitely a 3d entry. I understand that you could get confused, because I've been very thorough with my concepts. But that's the way I like to work, and it helps me get everything in place before the 3d. That said, more details could be added to the 3d model of course :)
Other artists just make a brief sketch, and then continue in the 3d package with multiple doodles, until they get it right. The down side to this approach is, that the artist could end up making details, that maybe look good but don't really make sense. I don't believe tiny Zbrush-details on the armor necessarily make the character.

For this challenge I wrote a brief design document with variuos info of my character, and then I started designing it based on this. This is also time consuming, and I could end up not making the deadline.

MartinNielsen

dandan: Thanks :) hurry up...

daelon: I believe you. I actually tried Zbrush once for about 1 1/2 hour. Then I gave up because of the interface. Then I tried Mudbox, and I could begin modelling without reading any documentation or tutorials. I do miss 3d texture painting in Mudbox though

Monster looks great! In my opinion he need some more agressive face, some aditional wrinkles around his mouth and below eyes. Or maybe big thin teeth. Looking forward for summoner 3d!

MartinNielsen
03-25-2008, 03:38 PM
velesius: Thanks  I'm in the "thinking box" about the detals. Remember that the final material will be a glowing one, maybe with some transparency as well. So I don't think you would be able to see all those details in the final picture. Longer teeth would certainly be visible, so I'll consider those

Right now I'll continue with the artifact and main character. Then I can see how much time there's left for tweaking. :)

daelon
03-25-2008, 06:33 PM
good work! althougt as i said, when you have some free time try to learn zbrush, in my opinion is usefull than mudbox, very complicated to start using, but much more easy modeling. (I learned to use it for this dominance war :P )

Yeah, I don't actually have a job doing art, but I'm sure it could get you burnt out fast doing it as a job and coming home with more stuff to finish. I already come home from my crappy job and don't feel like working on stuff sometimes. So I kinda get where you're coming from only it's probably even worse for you than me since you're doing it all day.

I wonder if it'd be ok to convert this into a 2D entry? Your 2d is already really nice, and since you wouldn't actually be submitting it in the 3d catagory, submitting the character in 2d would probably be allowed. Just a thought...
