Above I'll pop my latest work in progress so you don't have to trawl the thread for ever.
Below is my initial Stalker idea, but then I had a bit of a change of mind, follow the thread for other ideas and to see how he became what he is becoming now.

http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg149/rob_thornely/stalker_02.jpgok, next idea, i have a fair few more I'll scan in tonight and post tomorrow. Still not happy, he's a stalker alright but too gargoyle like, like the long face but.....more to come.

I really digg the first concept. The blue guy's mouth just isn't jivin'. The first one is killer though. I'd like to see you progress on that concept!

Also, play around with the eyes. Solid eyes can usually work for a character, pending certain other attributes. Not saying that your eyes don't work right now, but it would really be a good idea to explore other ideas on designs for how they would function in real life to give them a certain look.

still at roughing out stage, I have a lot of ideas and am reading all my feedback for suggestions. i want more strangeness though, still not there, and then there's props!http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg149/rob_thornely/stalker_03.jpg

I like the directions of the two coloured versions, both looking good. Try bringing in his sense of smell again if possible, I thought that made the initial ideas original.

sweet drawings! have you thought about an artifact yet?
Firerbert
03-05-2008, 02:12 PM
I still think you need to go back to the original and expand on that. It was a VERY solid first concept. The rest of these keep getting further and further away from it. I know you're playing around with ideas, but these other concepts just don't feel as solid as the first. There was so much style and character about the first concept that could be built upon. Just my opinion. I really fell in love with the first sketch, so I'm really pushing for it!

Hi guys,
Thanks for all the suggestions, I have tried to take them on board. I agreed about losing the character and felt I was straying off my stalker so I went back to the nasal thing, mostly. I added a smidge of vulture, a teeny bit of shaman, and a pinch of Roland Rat, (a 1980s UK kids tv puppet presenter!). I want my Stalker to be blind, I want him to hunt by scent and a little magic, like dousing for water or the child catcher in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, another 80s reference! I quite like his bone knife, well A bone knife but maybe a different one, I also like his potion bottles and skin tatoos (oops not painted back in yet but you can imagine and I'll update when I can). I am not totally happy with his body yet or his props, not enough magic yet and still really not sure about what his magical power is...help!
I need to start modelling soon though so I may start in 3D shortly and keep doodling until I settle him. So excuse the unfinished nature of this image, it is really a work in progress as it didn't exist even in my head yesterday.http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg149/rob_thornely/stalker_03-1.jpg

ok, removed scribbles from previous image and felt a bigger belt would complement the headgear, then this made me feel some kind of foot leather was needed too. Still may change all the prop gear but I'm reasonably happy with the basic stalker, artefact is weak though and power still needed, .......ideas anyone, i have a few but more always welcome!
Will try and finish this guy at some point soon but the modelling beckons. Need to get back on my 2D thread soon too, probably should have left that alone but it's all exciting. The day job is such an imposition!!!http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg149/rob_thornely/stalker_04.jpg

03-08-2008, 06:15 PM
OK, I had a revision of the feet, thanks ben for that idea, they work better with the hands now, 3d beckons. Thankyou Firebert, hope you like the concept better now. Still hope to make the props more post apocalyptic and the artefact is a stand-in for now.http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg149/rob_thornely/stalker_05.jpg

Here's another sketch. I took on an idea from Jason Juta and gave him a bow. I like the low-tech weapon but still don't feel I've got to grips with the post apocalyptic side of things. I have started making the 3D model too but will post my progress there when I have it a bit more sorted.http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg149/rob_thornely/stalker_06.jpg

this time i started to look at a slightly more aggressive stalker and tweaked propertions and his muscalature. I feel my stalker was built to follow his prey across the boundless wastes of the post apocalyptic wastes, using his magical powers to sense his victims. His hunched shoulders are inspired by the whole hyena, tiger thing, animals who I feel epitomisde stalking. His beaky nose is used to sniff out the target, he is blind and relies on magic and smell to hunt. He is still shamanistic which I like and I may pump up the whole voodoo side even more. This is still an unfinished concept as I like to leave myself some room to manoeuvre when i get it in my 3d package when I'm designing the thing. That and basically I have so little time!http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg149/rob_thornely/stalker_07.jpg

thanks for the critique. :D
one more thing on yours... id make him huge like a dinosaur and then show that in the final peice, by adding birds or another character to show scale...
also make his arrows and quiver a lot bigger...
best of wishes!

Gonna leave it be for a night, need to get some distance. Will return to texturing first pass and try to improve belt area and bow artefact some more before starting on my 9000 poly mesh. Also feel I am missing some visible magic effect, any ideas out there???

this is looking very uber! :D
i'd maybe just thicken up parts of the psythe, and the arm bands could look a little less uniform, or bigger or something, but all in all, nice detail!

Hi Robert,
Amazing designs wow! 2d and 3D you manage to make them all take what they need to show a better art work and personality! I like that a lot! I appreciate a lot your help and I think you might want to start getting all the modeling done so your rigging part (witch seems considerately alright for his design) will get in good time to final details.:wip:
Over all I love the shape, the remembrance of a bird, less human and yet with a lot of expression!:D

hey rob,
he's looking realy good, and good job on getting so much done. I realy like the belt and accessories too, they fit nicely. I llike the texture too but i think i prefer the purple shade more, like in your concept.

ok, better artefact, better props. He's gonna get some more sculpting tomorrow but then as and when work permits. I'm still trying to balance my 2d,3d and dayjob but it is great fun, loving seeing some of the work out there, there are clearly some really talented artists on this site. Thanks once again for any feedback, I take it all on board and it has improved this stalker guy no end.http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg149/rob_thornely/stalker_13.jpg

thanks Alex. I'm happy enough now withy his final shape, looking forward to getting him game ready now, lots of work to do and not much time left given work commitments and my 2d efforts. Hope you like it so far.http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg149/rob_thornely/stalker_14.jpg

Hi,
Yea i like it very much, i know about time:) same thing for me, should do final image and layoute for 3D but time left and all going sloW:)
Btw, regarding your character, one thing i want to note about, its how his hold bow, looks like it just attached to his hand:) I think you should curve his fingers for it will look like his hold bow normaly, and not attach it like with clue:) Good luck pal!
RobThornely
03-30-2008, 06:36 PM
Thanks again Alex - I will bend the fingers in my rigged model. That's still a few days off though, I am looking forward to posing and texturing him.
His backstory is a mysterious one, as befits a demon stalker. Born from the hinterlands east of the far east, from the sandstorms of the driest, widest deserts of earth, known to the ancient tribesman and bedouin by a name now long forgotten. A hunter with no remorse, no voice, no companions, no evolutionary tree. The spawn of the darkness. A solitary stalker, a crosser of voids, a wormhole reaver, no prey even hear his approach, his blind eyes glassily impassive, his vulturous beak scenting the distant target. His artefact is the VoidBow. A weapon as old as time itself and just as ruthless. This creature was sent by the lord of hell to return sin to earth. For the age of machines has cleansed the world of all humanity, destroyed all those lovely sinners! The demon stalker is the devil's assassin, hell's hitman.http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg149/rob_thornely/stalker_15.jpg

Just a quick paint on the skin,my work machine is a lot better than this jallopy at home so the texturing will hopefully be done there. I still really want to try and finish up both this 3d thing and my 2d effort....but I can't work on either again until saturday, it's going to be a busy day................!http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg149/rob_thornely/stalker_19.jpg

I couldn't help a little tweak or two to my sculpt for a bit of fun...I imagine nobody is still watching and that nobody but me would tell the difference anyway http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg149/rob_thornely/stalker_21.jpgbut here goes....

I'm still watchin! You kidding! Even though I didn't make the cut, doesn't mean I ain't interested in what all everyone is doing! I can really tell some major differences and a lot more definition. I like the tweaks you made for sure. I really hope you enter next year and have enough time and energy to dedicate to it. A lot can happen in a year that feels like only 4 months used to. Sheesh. Getting older sucks. Thank you for the kind words you gave me during the comp. I greatly appreciated them.
