Finally after GDC I’ve gotten a chance to get started on this thing. for some reason i decided to torture myself and go for a summoner class weapon so now i have to make 2 characters haha. with only a 9000 poly budget, that should be pretty tricky but fun.

Initial concepts and character premises to come later tonight.

I'm doing a clericon, but it has a special artifact that is humanesque, so we're in the same boat. good luck!

ok here goes for the first real post on this thing.

for the girl, I’m not exactly sure where it is that i want to go with her yet, im pretty sure though, that I want some lace type things on her to keep her look relatively soft, and not to specular.

for the god i want to contrast him, and have things like metal, and shiny leathers so there is a big material split between them.

for some reason I’m on a Japanese kick for designing right now. so im looking at a lot of Jrock stuff, and Akihabara fashion.

im not to good of a concept artist so here goes

right now I’m leaning towards Girl3, with guy2 as the combination of shapes. i want the designs to not get to crazy because of the poly limits for 2 characters.

this is at the point now where i feel comfortable jumping to 3d with the characters, to test how the silhouettes read. after that ill do some maquette in Zbrush, while i research what the clothing will be exactly.

so here goes for the concept for the summoner.

this is the first drawing i did after looking at my previous thumbnails that were generated from photos as well. Girl3s hair wasn't quite making things look to interesting. the whole thing felt just very plain. so I made it more into like a hoodie

i liked the whole hoodie and a skirt thing. and decided to go from there.

I used photo references from multiple sources to help me find the exact body type, outfit, and face for her. i researched a lot of different designs and sort of slapped a bunch of them together to get a shape i wanted. then after that i did a paint over and tweaked things to my liking. which worked out really nicely to help me get the idea out of my head. since i have such a hard time with just drawing from a blank canvas.

1. i went to 3d.sk and grabbed a body type that i liked. i wanted something skinny once i got the shape down in grey, i tweaked the shape a bit. then i did a quick sloppy drawing on top to see how it might look with a face
2. grabbed some photo of a female model from my HD and lined it up to help me out with proportions and basic shading.
3. threw on some quick hair, im still not sure if that will be the final hair cut, but i kinda liked the way it turned out. not to mention shorter hair will save on polys haha
4. started to change the shapes from the photo reference to get more the girl i had in my head.
5. add shadows, shape changes
6. add highlights shape changes
7. i found an image on a website that had a good pose, so i grabbed that and grayed it out. then tweaked it to be a hoodie skirt thingy. i wasn’t sure yet if i wanted the hoodie up, or if i was going to have it down.
8. put the hoodie up, and tried out some basic shading. to break up the flat grey.
9. added in the artifacts shape. and some torn lace. for some reason i really want lace to be somewhere on the character. this probably wont be the final shape for the lace, or the only area that has lace.

I’m at the point now where i can start modeling. I don’t want to spend to much more time drawing maybe one more day, then i should try to kick out this model this week.

finaly got some time this weekend, heres a quick update. i was able to build a base body that i liked, so now that the really hard part of modeling is done, i can get started on some of the detail stuff

man its been a while since i have updated, work has been pretty rough lately, so i dont think im going to be able to complete 2 characters by the deadline. im just going to have to stick with just the summoner, for now.

during the past couple weeks when i found the time i made the low poly head and hands, so now its just sculpting things real quick then on to textureing

here is a quick update for the body and outfit, the low poly for that stuff is all nailed down for a base now. it took me quite some time to get the rough in for the hair.

today im going to be finishing up the high poly for the hands and the arms.
once the cloak is done ill be able tune up the hair a bit more to my liking, but i might wait till i start texturing it to really get it more acurate to the concept.
after that the next 2 days will be for the cloak thingy, and then on sunday probibly some boots or shoes.

then the last part will be the crystals in her arm, and then on to texturing and shading for the final week or so


thank goodness they extended the dead line or i never would have had a chance haha to much going on in the office to be able to work on this as much as i would like.

i just got back from eating a dinner of Scorpions and Crickets really weird stuff so hopefuly after an exciting meal, ill make some exciting work haha.

i hope to have to cloth folds finished in the next couple of hours.

im going to be leaving all the small detail stuff off of the model because i think im going to be using Crazy bumps and the Nvidia Normal map filter to get in the really fine detaily stuff.

alrighty cloth folds are all finished up now its time to move onto the legs, and the boots then its on to transfering all this stuff back down to the low poly mesh, and then texture time woot

im not sure, but i think depending on how the normal maps turn out i may or may not soften the details on the legs, right now they are feeling a bit ot harsh for my tastes. but we will jsut have to see.

basic UVs are all set for her now, but im going to need to tweak them and optimize the mesh a bit as i think im 1000tris over the limit as of right now, but thats no big deal as ive been kind of sloopy hehe next update for the evening will be everything baked down to the low poly mesh, then tomorrow texturing should get rolling finaly.

ok everything is transfered down to hte Low Poly model now, stuff is looking pretty good to so far. time to start texturing. im going to be doing a lot of experiments with the cloth to see what i like the most.

just loaded it up into Maya for right now, using the Hardware Rendering.

Hey man,
Nice idea. I like that she looks normal other than the spikes in her arm. It is subtle. The hooded dress is also very believable.

But, I think her feet are too small and her nose seems too long.
I hope that helps.

heres an update on the textures for the arm, the head texture and bust texture are nailed down as well now. but ill show that later as i want to tune it some more.

i dont think the Crystals will be green hehe but yea thats what they are right now hehe. ill add some dirt and maybe burns or something once i get this color transfered to the other arm.

FLUXIST8070: thanks a bunch dude, i wanted to go with a design that was more simple, kind of like how spider man or Link from Zelda dont have a whole lot going on, but just keep things really simple. other wise i think the silhouette might get to complicated.

i think i agree on the feet and nose thing too, i play around with those to see if i can mak them better. thanks for catching that.

im going to do the boots real qucik, then start doing some color tests to see what kind of patterns im going ot add to her, outfit. i think color wise im liking this grey in the middle dark sleves thing, but the CGtalk red is really candy colored i think ill play with that and a couple other color combinations too just for fun.

then its onto the crytals and the color map will be done then onto posing and some shader stuff... holy crap i might actualy finish on time haha.

The textures are looking really good!
I think the colors for the outfit are working.
The outfit has a sanguine, futuristic feel.
There is no way around it...you have to finish!

hehe i just noticed i havent added my AO, and cvity maps to the color pass yet haha better not forget those 2 hehe.
after that onto the crystals and eyes then the detail maps will get done by the end of today, so tomorrow is free for posing and some shaders.
