I followed the tutorial by Paul Selhi but I have not done his tutorial justice as my waves look awful. I know Realflow or Add the Sea are better ways of doing this but I am tryingto animate the waves using displacement and a wind deformer as Paul did in his tutorial.

I have included a link to a small wave test I have done, but I think I am animating the wrong elements as can be seen in my animation. For those of you who have animated an ocean what do I need to animate to get the waves to "roll"? I used a wind deformer and displacement in the material.

In my material I selected "displacement" and then selected a noise, then animated the Movement, Speed, Low Clip and High Clip. If you know a better way to do this please let me know.

beware it's really bad!

Thanks :)

can you send your project file, someone might disect it and see what it contains.
to me it looks like the ocean's not moving, merely the camera :O

Don't you need Jenna for that tutorial?

Thanks Hilt. The camera isn't animated. What you see is the displacement map that is animated.

Brandon, I don't remember seeing it being used in the tutorial but I may have missed that so you may be right. I wonder if it can be done without using Jenna?

I believe MoGraph is the Maxon version of a Jenna plug-in, but much more powerful. I'll have a look at the video and see if MoGraph can do it.

Back in 2004 I wrote an article on several projects I had worked on in Cinema including making ocean waves. I wrote a quick little tutorial on how to do it. It's very simple and effective using very basic Cinema tools.

I think that should give you what you want. If you like it and want to contact me directly, I can probably dredge up that scene and send you the water so you can look everything over.

I wrote a tutorial on that last year (September) on creating an ocean scene by using shaders. Here is the result...

Alex, looking forward to your results!

Troyan, Thanks I sent you an email!

Thomas, Nice! Where can I find that tutorial?

Thanks PaintGuy! Glad you like it. It's pretty Ram hungry working and rendering this scene. However, you can find the tutorial in our September issue (2007) here:

Thanks Thomas. I have been playing with this for the last day or so and have made a little progress. Stay tuned for another WIP. :)
