Azalea is a warrior / Thorn Enchantress.

Her Artifact the 'Staff of life' it is a small mythical tree atop a mantle and stem of its own creation.

It is symbiotically linked with its owner and enables Azalea to wield and invoke any vegetative life to do her bidding

Her pet snapping dragons 'Sanseveria' which are a product of the staff are able to be housed within the roots of the tree when inactive. Her most trusted friend and ally, Sanseveria is Azeleas main method of transport and her mount when in battle.

Though the tree enables her to generate a wide arsenal of defensive and offensive weapons including arrow like barb projectiles, giant hammers/maces of dense Rockwood. Her Weapon of choice is a giant rose thorn blade bound to her by the vines of the tree which she is able to use in both short and medium ranged combat to cleave easily though metal / armor.

OOOO, I'm really starting to like this idea! Pretty original and I can't wait to see more.

your sketches had an underwater feel to me, but after reading the post I can see where this is going now. I thought the tree on the staff was a jelly fish...hey that could be a cool design...anyway...

You are definetly capturing the lighter side of the post-apocolyptic world. Refreshing.

have pushed myself to go in a fairly dark direction for this character as i felt that the first concept was a little to disney given the story and description of the world.
I also want her to feel as though she can realy do some direct damage against metal foes.

Hmmm 9k poly limit you say?.. I'll take that challenge!

Spent this afternoon seeing if this thing is actually going to work in practice...
Broke up the poly budget roughly for all given components then Blocked out the rough low poly geo for the Snapping dragon. Good news is it looks like my poly budgets are gonna work out about right! Still plenty left over on this guy to smooth and detail. Not to sure how well the limbs on this thing are going to work when i try to pose it though..

I like the idea of this character. She can team up with my nature-warlock:)
The tree ontop of her weapon is awesome!

Few crits thought. She doesnt look very nature, but that could just be the colortheme not really working. You are very kind to cgs, but fewer logos would be good:)
And her mount, I think that I would look better if it was just a little less reptile alike, and more of a plant. Like only having two legs, and maybe whines and stuff in a trail behind it, and perhaps not those claws that looks like from a velociraptor.

Good luck with the contest!

Thanks

Cheers for the crits!

Yeah the bonsai staff was the clear starting point for this character. Everything else just sprouted form there...

Yeah I can see your point about the lack of nature. I really didn't want to hammer people over the head with it and turn her into a green skinned poison ivy clone. She's supposed to be like the queen of thorny creeping roses. I think allot more of this will come from the detailing and texture.

Ha that's funny you say it looks like a velociraptor, I was going for a audrey2 from little shop of horrors crossed with Gigers alien. But this probably comes from my childhood desire to have my own pet velociraptor. I like the claws but I’m not sold myself on the fact that it currently walks entirely on the tips of them. I had tried sketching a root base with sprawling vines etc.

Hmm I had considered loping off a couple of the limbs to make it bipedal but I just can’t help but think how ridiculous it would look running along on two legs. It needs to look super agile and be able to sprint and climb. Making it three legged could work better to break up the symmetry and enhance it's plantliness.
Plants a real good at be asymmetrical!

Cheers

wow i just love that design.. it really stands out imo.
will you try to make it realistic or keep some of the style from the 2d draw in 3d?

Thanks for the comments guys!

To answer your question fellah, I will Try to keep fairly tru to the concepts in proportion and modeling. In terms of texture though, i intend to go somewhere between painterly and realistic with subtle granular detail.

I've been working on this over the last few days while simultaneously blocking out geo to get a feel for Azaleas proportions. Pretty happy with her stature and silhouette. Definitely taking a few liberties in my stylization of the female form but I'm ok with that... ;)

I have tried to work the banzai tree artifact into some kind of shoulder mount as i felt that carrying a staff and riding her mount while whipping a giant blade around all at ounce could be a little much even for this mean multitasking lass.

Any ways i kinda like it as it adds more character to her silhouette and allows me more freedom to work the vines across her in a symbiotic fashion. Hopefully this will also allow me to pose her in more dynamic ways further down the track.

Not sure how i feel about the metal / bark armored gauntlet and shin plates yet. They look kinda cool but i can't help but feel like they might just be unnecessary fluff...?

It looks great so far but I can't see your latest update

Here's a little test i did on a render of the mount to try some different vegetative texture and colours. Thinking about putting some striking markings on him also.

I think I'll probably end up incorporating some of this stuff more subtly so he looks less like a bunch of produce cellotaped together. kinda reminds me of this guy right now! =D

Absolutely fantastic, i love the colour concept you did with the whip-blade thing. Perhaps you could incorporate that into the staff over the sword idea, so that it's kind of a 'handle' to the whip. Not sure how that would look, but just chucking an idea out there.

Keep it up :D

Haven't posted any updates in a while.
I've put a fair bit of work into the Azalea over the past week so I'm playing catch up now.

Heres Azalea emerging from a bunch of cubes.

I've already addressed allot of the proportion issues present here. Thighs being way to long etc. Will post more once i have addressed her nakedness ;)
