I know a few guys who have got jobs this season who were having a hard time finding work . It's still very tough competition though so make sure you only show your best work and when I say best you work has to look like stuff that would win the CG challenges because your going against people who are hardcore film guys..i mean guys who do 16 hrs a day 7 days a week doing CGI ... so what ever you think is the best out there be it www.amazonsoul.com or www.jeffunay.com or even hard surface modeling make sure it's the quality of something that would be seen in a movie stylized is nice but people at Pixar and PDI are even more impressed with true anatomy and high quality clean modeling .

I am curious as to find out if anyone else on this forum is like minded. I would love to do a small piece of commissioned work for a cg studio if the oppurtunity arrived. I am not at this time interested in working full or part-time for a cg company. The kind of media work that I do involves web advertisement and conventional media. I have been working on a promotional project since last year that will go live this year.

I have been the sole designer behind that project so at this time I could not work exclusively for another company.

I design 3d environments that can be added to game levels or composited into video or photographs. I am well seasoned in traditional forms of art and very knowledgeable of 2d and 3d art programs. I also know how to integrate unique programs like Blender into any cg production setup no matter what 3d or compositing application is used.

I think that there are others like me on this forum who could would work with cg companies on a limited basis and offer our skills for production work or staff training. Or just a little somethin', somethin. Hey, if some of us were convinced with shiny things and beads, we may if even volunteer our talents for a project just to get our names in the credits. Seriously.

Maybe a flexible forum on cgtalk could draw others who feel the same way that I do. Maybe this forum area will let cg compnies that are looking to try a new approach to a project access our talents in this more casusal atmosphere.

I am "not" talking about intense "freelance" position hunting disscussions. Of course anything is possible once a deep connection is made.

I don't want to start some crazy thread. Your post just gave me a thought.

-"Hey you, buddy, see them tire rims on that 1955 chevy? I modeled em' in LightWave. That's right, I did with my own two hands on my little Mac. "

"Ok, that's cool. But could you just do your "real" job and pass me the popcorn. Then maybe you can move out of my view so that I can see "them chevy tire rims" for myself. Thanks a bunch. Right, like that guy worked in hollywood. Yeah he owns this movie theatre but hollywood, sure..."

also Sony, Rhythm and Hues, Digital Domain, and Dreamworks in LA are hiring. I just accepted a job as lighting TD at Rhythm and Hues. I have previously worked at Sony on 4 projects so I do have some relevant experience to offer.

Generally, I think they want at least 2 years experience and a very good demo reel. The jobs that they need a lot of people are: cloth, hair, feather TDs, lighters, compositors, effects artists. They don't need so many modelers, riggers, and shader writers it seems.:)

Rhythm and Hues? Also been a favorite of mine since I started 3D, I'll definitely look at what they're hiring for, thx for the tips

I wonder if all of this hiring has anything to do with the new working Visa laws in the U.S., as in the whole industry fighting for the same people...

The pick-up in VFX-intensive films and CG animated features is a real global increase that needs to be hired for. If anything, US visa requirements have been slow to adapt to the changing tech economy, H1-B quotas haven't even been lowered (yet) since they were raised in the booming late-90's. That thread about "Aliens of Extroardinary Abilities" discusses a very rare visa type, not what most CG artists would use if moving to the US.

Other areas of CG jobs, like television production and TV commercials, remain slow now, so even though there are more top film production jobs, there may be fewer places to get started for some people, and of course there's an enourmous flood of new students on the market, as well as more experienced workers than ever.

of course all these cool jobs have come along just when i'm working on an intensive freelance project that wont be over for another month and a bit :annoyed:

still on the other hand, i have work right now and that's good... and anyhow i wouldn't be good enough (nor do i even have a showreel right now) so even if i din't have work... i'd still not be able to apply... oh well - such is life.

whatever it's great to see the cg jobs market getting more active. good news all around :)
