I’m looking for a solid motherboard with good expansion capabilities to match a pair of Xeon x5345 processors. I’m looking at an Intel S5000XVN – seems to have all I would need except I’d like to spend a little less cash – more in the $300 – 400 range.

Anyone have experience with these chips and an affordable MoBo?

Any bit helps

Thnx

I'm looking to build a renderfarm with dual quadcores as well. I was looking at this guy:

http://www.newegg.com/product/product.aspx?item=N82E16813131191

but I don't have any experience with server mobos.

yes! I just got that one. I got the open box for $140. It has pci express 16 (thanks adam). be careful getting a case for it though it has to accept ssi ceb form factor (not the same as atx!). I got this guy:

http://www.newegg.com/product/product.aspx?Item=N82E16811147097

which can be a rack mount or pedestal case

many thanks for the tip -

does this mean that an ATX MidTower won't likely suit my needs?
there seems to be a distinction between ATX and eATX?
would you happen to know what that is?

thnx

I think that atx has the same connector holes so you can use it in an atx case as long its big enough. ssi ceb is diff though i think. the only way to be sure is to go to man website and see if they list eatx or ssi ceb as being supported.

i read one post on newegg where someone got a non ceb case and had to drill holes in it...

hmm.
what about power-supply. I'm looking at some case/PSU combos but few are rated higher than 500W. worried it might not be enough to run 2 x5355s and a QuadroFX4500. Would you happen to know to measure this?

5355's are 120 watts procs but dont use more than about 90 watts under4 full load.

your DIMMS will consume about 13 watts each

your QFX4500 will consume about 90 watts at full burn

sound card is only about 10 watts

the rest of your board will want about 40 watts for northbridge/southbridge/MCH/drive controllers, etc.

hard drives will eat up about 10 watts each at strart up (but less than than during use)

add it up and give yourself about 20% additional headroom margin.

this will be the rating for the power supply you will want to buy...

cheers,

or you could just buy a BOXX and not have to worry about any of that...

ha - haa!
thanx Adam
we actually had a BOXX salesrep in a studio where I freelance not all that long ago. I think they were looking into getting a server network but somehow it fell through.
At any rate, I'd consider making a purchase if you told me I could buy a machine from you sans processors.

Ya know, that is funny, because just today I was up at the local computer shop getting a quote from them on a custom dual Xeon E5450 system. They were having a hard time finding a mobo for those chips. I guess most people that come in to the shop dont typically ask for that kind of hardware. They asked me several times what it was going to be used for. :D

Adam, if you dont mind me asking, what kind of mobo's does Boxx use in the 8400? I read the specs on the site, but didnt see any mention of a board.

pfistar, sorry, didnt mean to hijack your thread. I thought it was funny how I was looking for the same thing today.
