Hi there! Just wanted to say hello to this amazingly talented group of artists. My name is Brigid Ashwood and I am a professional mythic/fantasy artist. Although for quite a while now I have been largely a member of the very small micro-world that is Fairy Art. Trying to break free of that mold actually and while I still love to paint fairies I am really working on refining my craft and style and hopefully just developing a reputation as a good artist rather then a Fairy Artist (don't ya just hate labels!) My artistic history is as a traditional fine artist with very traditional mediums. Oils, egg tempera, tempera grassa, watercolor etc. But chemical sensitivity has hastened my arrival full time into the digital medium. I have a background in digital art and design so that helps, but I started my graphic design career in the sign making industry - the standard program for that industry being Corel Draw and Photopaint. So while I do have Photoshop CS3 Extended I am suuuuuuccchhh a n00b at it! Arggh! So expect a lot of REALLY dumb questions from me. I paint digitally in Corel Painter and do some work in Photoshop - but haven't tried painting in Photoshop at all. I am blessed with a Wacom Cintiq and I am in humbled awe of those who paint on Intuos and Graphire. I wouldn't even have a line of pixels to show any of you if I didn't have the luxury of a Cintiq. I just can't get that whole paint down here and look up there thing. Motor skilz...I not haz dem.

I was hoping to get some thoughts and critiques of what is basically my first start to finish digital painting (prior digital paintings have really been scans of unfinished oils that I have then continued working on in Painter). So I suppose this is a WIP thread for me.

I like it!!! not much of a critque I know , I don't paint in this style but I would say the skin tone is off, it seems there is too much grey/black in it, they say when mixing paint not to use white or black, while I'm sure u didn't do this but it just seems to have that feel to me.
Welcome to the forum

Hi Bri,

I really like this image. I rarely comment on images at these forums, I don't have the expertise that others have here at CGTalk. But in this case, I'll make a suggestion to make it stand out a bit. Use a blue gradient for the background. I think it pull the image out and make the warmer colors have more life. With all the white around it, the colors look a bit muted.

I think this piece is leaps and bounds better than the other ones I saw on your site. Maybe it's more rooted in reality so it's more convincing? I dunno...but the detail on it is very well done and it looks very well crafted.

Thanks for the lovely feedback, I do appreciate it. I love so many things about working digitally I think the most wonderful aspect is the ability to experiment easily - it has really freed up my imagination and I am enjoying the aspect of creative play more then every before, not having to worry as much about the technical aspects of painting such as the drying time of glazes as in egg tempera and oils it is really allowing me to just have fun with the composition a bit.

Here are two new pics.

first one is too large to upload:
