Hello everyone at cgtalk. I'm posting here a couple of new images I've done in the past week during some spare time off of work.

The concept is an x-marine suffering from shellshock everyone believes is combat related. actually he stumbled upon an alien race living in the unexplored jungles of the world while on tour in vietnam. having no choise he is plunged into a war of annihilation against the aliens. (I have'nt decided if he truly sees aliens or just completely insane!).

Good job. The Marine looks badass and his gun is badass as well. The alien design is cool. Thinking about modeling him or doing something else with him?

thanx dragonkore!

I think step one would be some serious coloring.

I'm currently hard at work teaching myself verious 3d programs so modeling is a must, although I've got my eye on another drawing of mine for the first model.

here are a couple images I did a while back also depicting soldiers. I was interested in the concept of the american soldier as a modern crusador on a mission to convert the world into "democracy"(=capitalizm).

I think they are all pretty nice. The last two I almost don't want to crit, since they look much older than your insane Marine.
On the marine though, I really like the style, the poses, the light source is very consistent throughout. The anatomy is kind of Frazetta inspired (which is cool) and the skin really 'sticks' to the character. Really great job. The foreshortening is very nice, but I'm not convinced of the guy's left leg. It just doesn't look like his heel would be on the ground if his leg is bent to that extreme of an angle.

As for the other two, it looks like you have improved a lot since then. There are very little things, like the second guy's knee and foot aren't pointing in the same direction (on his right leg). And I would have made that spear much longer, but you were probably trying to fit it into the paper.
And the guy who is jumping, his pinkie pointing seems kind of funny. I actually knew a guy in my Tae-kwon-do class who used to hold fists, but when he sparred his pinkies would point. Until someone kicked his hand and broke one of them.

too many words?

thank you dmcgrath!!
your crits are excellent and very perseptive. I've been waiting for some in depth crits for a quite a while.

While were on the subject of frazetta, yes he is one of my influences as is gerald brom, phil hale, rick barry and the king: simon bisley who inspired me throughout my childhood: here's one from back in the days:

I like the new one very much. Nothing I can really critique on this one. I can really see the Bisely influence on this one, good job.

btw- Phil Hale is one of the best, isn't he?

Nice work Rimmer...Only thing i can say is keep going to those figure drawing classes...Some of the anatomy is a little iffy, however i think you have a great grasp on perspective and forshortening...Main thing i can say is that your heads need a little work...Strengthen those jaws and i think your character would have a much more powerfull effect...Keep up the good work...

Thanx for the input Mindkontrol, although I have never taken a figure drawing class in my life nor have I studied drawing formaly your input ismost welcome. my formal education is that of industrial design and as my development as an "artist" is purely self tought I do feel the need to strengthen my basic technics.

check out the new thread, I'm posting new character concepts and would like to hear everyones opinion on them!!!:wavey:

Your last piece you posted just blurs into one big figure in my opinion. I can not see where one character starts and another ends. Everyone is equally shaded. You have good talent at shading, but work on changing it up. The light source should make some characters darker than others...etc.etc.

excellent observations Neil, actually I was going for that blured effect because I beleive that in war every thing around you has that blury feeling emphasising the chaos (checkout the fighting scene in Gladiator where maximus fights the barbarian horde, ridley scott deliberately slowed down and blured the fight to create a feeling of disorientation and chaos).

In regards to the light you'll notice the character at the bottom is the brightest while the demon at the back is the darkest.
