View Full Version : Character: dog creature
gjpetch 05-03-2003, 02:31 PM Here’s a monstrous dog-man I’ve started building. I’m trying to make him as big, mean, detailed and angry as possible. The concept is a bit of a cliché I’ll admit, but its fun nonetheless. The head is virtually done, I’ve still got to add a lot of veins and striation to the torso and arms, and I mean to add some accessories, belts, weapons and so on. How do you guys think I should approach the legs? My current thinking is that I’ll make them robotic/mechanical. Any crits? I know that to me the proportions currently seem a little bit inelegant. Any thoughts on how I could improve it before I go too much further into detailing?
I believe my web host doesn't allow outside linking, but if you copy these URL's to your address bar they should work

very odd way i had to view the pics... it didn't let me view the pics at first if i copied the link. had to go to your site first (which is blank), then i could view the pics..! strangeness
looks awesome so far :D the head is fantastic, and it looks like you're working on the body right now, but if you really want him to be big and mean looking i'd advise you beef him up a lot.. the arms looks good so far too. one other problem is that the legs look a little too short..

The head looks great. Hopefully you'll make his body as muscled and mean looking as his face. Make sure to give him very broad shoulders and you're set.

A bit more of an update

Again, sorry for my server. I think you have to have seen a popup window before you can see the images, so you may have to go to http://gjpetch.coolfreepage.com/index.html
Sorry, bear with me, I don't know of any free servers that allow proper outside linking; and once you have seen that popup it should all work propperly.
Anyway, that aside, I've built some clothign and gear, and made the legs more human. Still got to finnish of the gear, texture him, pollish up the modeling, possibly rig him and make a small environment. UVW mapping and rigging are going to be tough, as the geametry is pretty heavy.
Very nice...I just don't like the feet....that's the only thing I don't think goes with him very well...other than that the details you're putting into this guy is stunning...great job:thumbsup:

leg proportions looks funny from front but okay from side and back.. so dunno whats up with that.
only suggestion i have is to move the nipples to a more central position... the look too splayed outwards.
kick ass model

Wow nice details in the head.
Maybe you can take a look at his legs. Make them stronger.

I think it's cool. THe legs could do with more detail though.

Thanks for the replies,
Mr. Nice Guy, Teyon, Krugar, Remi, you're all right, the legs aren't finished yet and need more detail (not to mention toes). I meant to keep the legs a bit small and scrawny, to contrast with the upper body. I thought that would make him a bit more interesting, but perhaps it just looks wrong.
Perhaps you're right about the nippels Krugar, I'll have a look at them.

That is REALLY cool :applause: An awesome character!
I see the legs are not finished, so I won't comment on those. The face is superb - the tension you've created is superb. What is the poly count? Must be insane!
Now, where is his tail? ;)

coming along very nicely ;D i agree the feet look more like hooves than feet but i like they way the legs are shaped, just not he proportions.
i wish i could model like you :(
would you like a cookie? ;)

Thanks Leigh, feel free to comment on the legs, any input is valuable; and besides, I had meant the final legs to be pretty much the same as the leags in the last update, only with more detail. If there's a better way to approach them then I want to know about it before I get too far into detailing. The poly count is currently about 60,000 verts. I'm thinking of building a low resolution version and generating displacement maps to get it back to the origional at render time. I was thinking of giving him a tail, perhaps a long, ulgy, bald, rats tail.
Thanks again DrakeX, If you look at the latest image (http://gjpetch.coolfreepage.com/pup_tt_02.jpg) you'll see that I've given him much more human legs now, which I think looks better than the hooves.
