Story -
When Henrys parents were killed by the machines when he was 3, he was left to grow up orphaned, homeless and alone. Until one day when he found a ring made of bone. He was unsure of its purpose but figured it was nothing more than creepy decoration, and at least equal to the value of a couple good meals, so he kept it in the best place he could think of, his finger!

Shortly after, Henry started to feel extremely strong, his empty stomach felt full, his energy was endless. This increased as the days went on, until he became extremely powerful, with the agility and strength to defeat giants with ease. Henry knew it was the ring, and became extremely cautious due to its fragility, His greed took over and he quickly and crudely build a glove around his hand and arm to protect it. The weight didnít matter as he had no problem lifting it. He didnít even make it removable, as he wanted to make sure his ring was always safe

Soon after, Henry discovered the true source of his power, the Skullies! Curious, child like creatures that he had unknowingly summoned by wearing the ring. It spooked him at first, but eventually he got used to it, and they began to form a bond.

It wasnít all good though, Henry began to change, he noticed half of his body starting to decay. He knew, the Skullies knew, it was the ring. He had to choose a path. Having a sense of friendship and family for the first time, Henry decided to keep the ring, regardless of its effects on his body. He knew he could remain powerful if he protected the Skullies, and the Skullies followed him wherever he went.

Henry realized that his power had to be put to use, so he joined the war to fight the machines, and avenge his parents.

Woo hoo! Welcome Mike!
Interested to see what you come up with!

OK, so heres my thumbnail turned quick sketch (I still have a lot of detailing to do.).

I'm still working on the story, but heres the jist of it...

Orphan finds ring, starts to feel extremely powerful, realizes the ring is breakable so he builds a junked together glove to protect it. Soon realizes that the ring didnt give him power, but that it summoned skullies which have been feeding him strength, while at the same time he starts to rot. Soon, they form a symbiotic relationship of power and protection........and...friendship?

So yeh, hes a Human Summoner and his artifact is the ring.

Lemme know what you think!

Hey Mike

Skullies are awesome..

We talked about the hand yesterday.. I thought maybe some kind of bullet proof plexi glass fishbowl thing on the end so you can see his hand with the ring on it. Just a thought

SirMitchell

Ahh thanks Alex!

Yeh I didn't think of the glass type thing because I wanted it to be extremely durable, but I think I could work around that and make it bulky with a bit of glass and make it look rad. Good thinkin!

Nice Bold shapes dude! You should go rent Zoolander and keep in mind the part with Agent Mulder from X-Files. He plays a hand model with a cryogenic glass hand-chamber. Of course, you won't be going that comical, but it's still entertaining :). This will be fun to see your working process :D.

Eric

BTW, in the final illustration be sure to paint hundreds of those small skullies. That would be most triumphant.

Ha! Its funny you mention Zoolander, cause thats the first thing I thought about when Alex mentioned the glass hand. I will probably be doing a much bulkier version, minus the cryogenic part.

And yes, the finished piece if going to have a bunch of skullie guys. It will be marvelous!

I like the funky asymmetrical design, and I second SprayNation's vote for the final illustration being chock-full o' skullies.

Cool.

The mix of designs and volumes works really well here. Not a paticular fan of that crown though.

Thanks Isaac!

Kodiak - Definitely agree with the crown comment...I was already on it!

So I still dont feel this is right, but I am getting there...I need to revisit the armor, my idea was for him to make it out of scrap, and add on as he goes, but it just looks too soft.

Anyways, I would love to hear your guys crits, even on the armor.

Yeah I'm really digging this.. The armor reminds of airplane wings. Not saying that as a bad thing. Very unique look.. I'd agree with the soft comment. Although if you made the left side of the chest armor where it goes around the arm, into more of a cross section that would fix that and might look pretty cool.. Obviously not like this image, I couldn't find plane wing cross section, but it gets the point across.. OR you could just redesign it..:)

Ooooh I totally didnt think of that, great idea! I will try that, as well as a few paintovers of different armor types, and go with that.

I also might shorten the blades on his hand, or remove them completely.

Thanks for the feedback alex!

Original Mike, love it. Small dagger in right hand seems a little weak to me though. And skully reminds me of my kid :D

Ha! Unfortunately for me, I lack such talents. Deadbear is a good pal of mine, but no, I am not him.

Thanks for the kind words though!

update!

I came around and got rid of the tiny dagger, and gave him a neato pretty dang huge mace thing. I always felt like death by blunt force would be so much worse then being sliced in half or stabbed, though he can do that as well.

Anyways, this is just a rough paintover of what I had, but I like it a lot more, its kind of what I wanted initially, but was having a hard time getting it rolling.

Lemme hear those crits and comments!

I like the latest revisions to the character! I really like the Mace. Now that you've added it I think you need to tone down some of the arm/ shoulder armor detail. The new image looks like the guy would have a very hard time moving around let alone fight with his badass mace!

For instance the shoulder pad and the top of his glove are almost colliding. I'd just chop those a bit!

Thanks Keight!

Vinod - Yeh, I was thinking about some of that. I will definitely make sure hes fully movable before I finalize the design. Good eye! I also need to finish designing his leg armor and stuff, I kind of just threw something generic on there for now.

Hey Mike, really cool concept and like a lot your sketches, great!!. The armor looks awesome and perhaps the boots needs to be a bit biger to balance the design with the large weapon and left arm armor, only a comment :) Again, great work and looking forward for more updates. Cheers mate!!

Lookin' good Mike!
I like the sense of weight the mace has, it's all because of the good drawing and balance of his arm/shoulders. I think you should extend the handle of the mace a bit.. he wouldn't be able to hold it with two hands if he wanted. Plus wiht a big weapon like a mace it's better if there's a longer handle just for visual balance.

Can't wait to see the finish!

I love the character, and the animation feel to it makes it look pretty nice. The only thing I'd say is that the red cape seems like an afterthought. Maybe if you incorporated that bright red into some other element in him to make him look less flat. Otherwise it's looking sweet. Can't wait to see what you do with the background.

Hey Mike, AWESOME design! Dont mean to kiss ass too much but its really nice to see some original illustration styles being used. After doing an illustration degree myself, I am strugling to get my style across with this type of brief...you have inspired me to keep tryin' though!

I love it! Your style is spot on and just brings so much life to the design! I may have a strike of the man card for saying this, but my initial reaction was, "Awwww, those little guys are so cute!" Both presentations are really good. Just need to make the background more refined so it flows into the foreground compositionally (if that is even a word, i dunno).

Turned out great Mike!
I really like the nice touch of red on the mace. Also the way you used texture works well, you didn't overpower the image, just added some of the "real" detail that people like to see. The upturned cigarette is a nice touch too.

The model sheet looks good, like my sheet I think it could stand to have a bit mroe life to it so it's not so stiff. But it is a model sheet!
