Some major rushed texture work here, what do you guys think? Each texture was about 4hrs tops due to my laziness and deadlines =) . i need some major critique as im thinking of adding one of these guys to my reel, so be as harsh as u want! :)

They don't look bad. The top guy's ears kind of bother me, other than that the textures are a little on the simple side, but they get the job done.

I think a good rule of thumb is that if you aren't happy with a piece, don't include it on your demo reel. So it really comes down to whether or not you feel these are (despite being rushed) representative of your work. If you think the textures are rushed, and could do a better job, why not spend the extra time to make these models really shine? Or perhaps the 4 hour texture time is a bonus to show you can get good work done in a very short period of time. Its all in how you look at it...

i seem to have a lot of problems with blurry looking textures, i've tried a ton of things like unsharp mask, adjusting levels, but it always turns out the same

i normally handpaint the entire texture (dodge/burn) first and throw some overlays ontop

any suggestions?

If you are using Maya, Maya automatically applies a blur value of "1" to all file textures. You can adjust the blur to be a value of "0" in the attribute editor with the material/file texture info.

Hope this helps.

hm so is that why all my textures look blurry all the time? :)

where exactly is that? i've checked the attributes on the file node and material and i cant seem to find a blur attb

it's got nothing to do with your render settings or whatever.

You need to put more time into actually drawing the textures. Make those folds look more real and more detailed. Don't just put a doge and burn next to eachother. Take a close look at what folds look like in real life and try to make them look like that in your texture. Also don't just paint on a colored background and add highlights. Make cotton look like cotton and make leather look like leather etc. Use your eyes and a lot of patience :)

Well, yes actually it can have to do with render settings.
Open up the material with your file texture on it. Near the top, hit "file", under file attributes there is a filter type and an option called "Prefilter" with a number value. Turn prefilter to "off".

However, if your texture is low detail and blurry to begin with, this likely won't have much of an effect (as mentioned by -iNw-kleinluka) . The prefilter is usually a fairly subtle blur to begin with. However, it will help somewhat in bringing out the hard pixels.
