View Full Version : More memory for rendering in MR?

Quick question. I have a computer with 2 gigs of ram. When I do a command prompt render, I notice that the computer is only using around 875 mb ram to render the scene. Is there a way to append more ram to this process through maya. I would think more ram used for rendering would make it faster, am I wrong? I'm not running anything else but the renderer, and of course explorer.

thanks

You can run windows with the /3gb switch. Try google for finding out how to do that.

JG, I don't think you can force the process to use more ram. It just uses as much is required, no more & no less. To change the way the renderer handles memory (and possibly accelerate your render), you may change the BSP tree algorithm, depth and size (Render Settings - Raytracing - Acceleration). Consult the manual and this forum about BSP trees.

Auto Memory Size is on by default. Try the -mem flag followed by the amount of memory in megabytes and turn verbose on to see what is happening.

Enter the following into the commandline render -r mr -h to see more options.

Another alternative is to set the memory limit through either Render > Render Current Frame Options or Batch Render Options.

Increasing your BSP depth increases memory usage for raytracing as a rule. But there's a law of diminishing returns, eventually it hurts you.

If it renders without flushing then chances are it's using exactly what it needs. Balance your BSP settings to get the most speed vs memory usage but it is scene dependant and it just might not need that much.
