Id like to see the modeling challenge based on one subject. Like the first one was with the David.

I love to see how different people attack the same subject matter.
It reduces the amount of thinking you have to do when it come to deciding what to model. Plus you get to compare how accurate your modeling skills are to other modelers out there.

It doesn't have to be a statue, that isn't open to interpretation(Although statues can be cool). It could be a person that the artist can capture in what ever way they want.

What can i say, when I'm modeling i like things simple. Show me what you need modeled and ill model it.

Funny that you mention that.....

I was thinking of posting a VERY limited list of subjects (like 10) for the next challenge..

And for the future inofganic topics I was thinking:
U.S.S. Enterprise CVN-65 (Build models from a modern Carrier)
OR
Movie Wheels

And then do another Star Wars topic...

I've been waiting for a portrait challenge! That would be a really good one. I think you said something in the past about doing portraits of other comptetitors. That would be totally cool but we'd have to promote it a little more so there would be a wide selection to choose from and once one portrait is spoken for, then no one else can do that portrait. It would be kinda lame to see 15 of the same guy/gal and might make other people just want to quit if one person is doing better than someone else. A portrait challenge of famous artists would be good too. Similar to what Antropus did on Rick Baker on ZBC a year or two ago. I'd love to work on the next organic project but Dominance War is unfortunately all consuming.

Looking forward to seeing this tomorrow. I've never participated on this; I've always been a watcher and have only put one thing up for critique. So I'm going to do this no matter what.

I think your own concept of an original droid that would work in the Star Wars galaxy would be a fun thing... unless it's already been done.

A super hero could be a lot of fun too. or an anti-hero type character... (that the right on I'm thinkin' of? He's a villain for the first bit, but ends up helping the hero in the end?)

a 3D self portrait would be nuts... <.< I take it we'd have to have a real life photograph to compare to our portrait?

Sandking

Yeah, I'd also like some portraits. I'm doing right now one of my friend and it's really hard to get it right but it's fun nonetheless.

Firerbert
03-01-2008, 03:45 AM
I think that would be too in line with the current DWIII challenge; given the subject matter that is. Now to do a specific character would be cool or set design from the movie. I think it would be even better if it was a "Middle Earth Challenge"

What's all this comic/cartoon stuff?
I haven't even seen a comic or cartoon since I was 12.
What next? Nursery Rhyme characters?
The current challenge gave the freedom of the best art gallery on the planet to choose from, and only 4 or 5 people even bothered to finish an entry.

I always see destructiveness coming from your side man. No offense, I just read comments from you about HCM and they are always kinda agressive. Maybe that's the way you want them to be.

Peace :)

As for appearing aggressive, I'm just constantly exasperated at the dumbed-down, puerile nature of the modern world, where people would rather model daffy duck than depict the essence of hubris or catharsis in sculpture.

Perhaps you're right. We need a less puerile theme which allows everyone to wholly explore the essence of sculpture. I think that the next challenge should be based on something more along the lines of this:

http://www.cgnetworks.com/gallerycrits/63632/63632_1105961432_submedium.jpg

In all seriousness, your holier than thou attitude is getting a little stale. If you don't like something, no-one is forcing you to participate. It's really as simple as that.

are you serious ?

i still watch cartoons and love comics and i dont think i will ever stop loving those even if i am 80 years old :)

btw, in my opinion it is actually more difficult to create good caricature or a comic character than a realistic model. I can go on and on about that but i will save it for later.

i believe it takes more skill and artistic vision to create a character from The Incredibles as opposed to creating a character from Beowolf.

Cartoons? I like both Simpsons and Ghost in the Shell - which you could call cartoons. And I find them attractive in intelectual as well as artistic way... Well maybe latter is more about GITS but there are a lot cartoons (Trio of Belleville) which could inspire. As to comics book - grab Thorgal or 30 Days of Night. You missed a lot since your youth oDDity. Relax and take it easy - as was said earlier - no one forces you to anything and I see that you're only one to take it so seriously.

And yeah - I'm the one who hasn't finished last HCMC, so what?

Hubris/Dictionary
noun
excessive pride or self-confidence.
• (in Greek tragedy) excessive pride toward or defiance of the gods, leading to nemesis.
DERIVATIVES
hubristic |(h)yoōˈbristik| adjective
ORIGIN Greek.

Hubris/ Thesaurus
noun
arrogance, conceit, haughtiness, hauteur, pride, self-importance, egotism, pomposity, superciliousness, superiority; informal big-headedness, cockiness. antonym humility.

I know which catagory to place the Cloddster.
Some folks just need more challenges in order to look at naked men and hopefully some real good crotch shots.... also, the more mindless copying the better, no need for imagination, why let something like that get in the way? We can tell plenty about a person based on what they like to look at.

Firerbert

OMF!
That was a little below the belt, don't you think? Wow.
On the subject of "We can tell plenty about a person based on what they like to look at"; it is fairly obvious that people that skim through CGS portfolios like to look at girls. Go to the portfolio section and at the bottom of the page you will find the "Popular Artwork". 99.9% of the time, you have a sure fire bet of seeing almost all 2D or 3D thumbnails of some part of the female anatomy.
That was slightly off topic, but anyway. Damn.

Seriously man. Watch some cartoons immediately. I think you need to.

I'd suggest starting with Chuck Jones "What's Opera Doc?" 1957 and "Rabbit of Seville" 1950 for an intellectual type person such as yourself. Avoid Tex Avery until you've become acclimated to the medium once again.

This whole thread reminds me of advanced level animation when I was in school. I was repeating the class, getting special credits, I guess. Every year we'd get twenty new students, and everybody would need to create an animated short. Of those twenty kids there was always a handful of guys who would pitch some outlandish, dark, serious melodramatic story where everybody dies and George Bush goes to hell. The University actually encouraged brooding, melancholic work, because they wanted the animation department to reflect the style of the modern art department. Trouble is, the people who were putting money into the department expected Pixar style art. Ultimately the program was put out to pasture and no longer exists. I'm not saying that we shouldn't create classic art, but to completely abandon anything commercial kind of goes against what the software was created for.

Of course, because the Cg entertainment industry and what it produces is almost completely aimed at kids and teens.
So, calling it puerile is hardly an insult, it's just an accurate description of the sort of product it has to make to suit the sort of audience is largely has.
I, as a 36 year old adult, am never going to like what it produces.
