I've been having this peculiar issue with my Thinkpad T61 that has been occuring even after 3 clean formats to test the driver. Basically, XP (SP2) requires Microsoft's KB888111 hotfix to enable the Universal Audio Architecture bus on the laptop. Installing that patch will enable the SoundMax HD Audio bus system, which will then ask for drivers and install.
However, randomly, on boot, I get an error that says "SoundMax Driver Failed to Load." And the only way to correct the issue is to re-install KB888111, in which case, no reboot is needed and the sound device is back up and running again. I've tried updating to the latest SoundMax HD driver from Lenovo's website, and it seemed to be good for a time, but the problem just keeps resurfacing. In some cases, just restarting the computer will properly re-load the audio driver. I have also tried installing the driver through the device manager as opposed to running the setup utility but to no avail. It will work, then after a few restarts over the next day or two, the device disappears again.
Lenovo tech support quite sucks on this one. There's no documentation on this one and when I called tech support, they just instructed me to do the same thing, which is to remove KB888111 by deleting its registry key (uninstall is not possible for this one through add/remove programs), restarting, and uninstalling the SoundMax HD driver.
Some help resolving this really irritating matter is MUCH appreciated.... I hate having to leave a copy of the sound driver setup and the hotfix on my hard drive just to re-run it every couple of days.
On an unrelated note ...
Newer versions of SoundMax HD driver for both Dell and Lenovo disable the ability to record the stereo-mix output - does anyone know of any patches to the driver that can re-enable this? The only registry mod I know of will show stereo-mix as an option, but upon actually trying to record using it, there is no audio.
