Does anyone know a good tutorial in creating building Window like on http://events.cgsociety.org/NVArt/02/images/18644-1_CC.jpg

Basically I want the same effect, hunderst of windows over different places in the scene. I would imagine using the title material in 3ds max would do the trick, but I am unable to get it to look anything decent..

Any tips and advice welcome
Thanks

Create a self-illum map for your lit windows. This will make them appear to be lit. That's provided that you have something light enough in the diffuse map to give the look your are going for. For example on the left side of your reference image here there are some windows you can clearly see the interior of the building. So if in your diffuse map you have a little bitmap for each windows interior the self-illum map would make this glow. If you are looking to do this procedurally I am not sure how I would go about that. For mapped geomtry this should work fine though.

Chances are that's a custom painted texture.

One thing that comes to mind that I haven't explored, but worth mentioning, is MapZone, a pretty nifty little procedural texture program. Was in the last issue of 3D World mag.

you might want to check out houdini. There's some excellent tutorials on www.3dbuzz.com (http://www.3dbuzz.com) which give some good insight into the procedural nature of houdini.
