View Full Version : iMac: 2 RAM modules with different frequencies
xsenos 02-24-2008, 11:39 PM So basically -- can I upgrade my iMac's (October 2007) 1GB RAM module (DDRII PC5400 SDRAM 667Mhz) to 3GB by adding a 2GB RAM that is running at a different frequency -- DDRII PC6400 800Mhz?

You generally want to keep everything similar when adding additional RAM -- Even down to the stick size. Consider adding another 2GB stick or just another 1GB stick to make it either 4GB total or 2GB total.

Generally adding faster ram to a slower machine is fine. it will all just run at the speed of the slowest stick. But, sometimes things dont all go to plan.

Check to make sure your setup will even support the 800mhz stick. I dont mess with mac's much. But the mobo needs to be compatible with that frequency or it wont work. Personally I would just get another stick of 667mhz since thats what you already have thats all it will run at. 667 is generally cheaper too.

the chain isn't stronger than it's weakest link.
if Apple mounted 667 in it the mobo probably only supports 667, adding in 800 will then only operate at 667, therby waste of your money.

Ok, apparently the RAM modules iMac uses are two times shorter in size than regular RAM modules. I'm confused now. I will have to return the Kingston 4GB 5300 Pin DIMM kit I just received. But how do I order RAM that fits? What parameter should I look after to get the shorter kind of RAM?
My local Apple dealer only seems to have 1GB RAM modules. I'd really prefer 2GB modules since I do heavy Photoshop work these days a lot.
RAM iMac uses looks like this. What is this?

Edit: It's SODIMM. Found it at the same dealer I ordered the Kingstones from. Negotiated to exchange the kit for two 2GB SODIMM + difference in cash. Thanks a lot for attention! Hopefully some iMac users will read this and know for future. :)

Yes, this isn't unique to macs, ANY laptop uses sodimm & ANY desktop uses dimm, mac included of course. Hopefully this will be useful on a search. But the iMac, because of it's small form factor uses laptop sodimm.
