Hey all, it's been a while since I posted here last. I've been busy building my portfolio for my coming graduation. Here is one of my latest pieces. I named it after the ship in Pirates of Dark Water, on of my fav cartoons.

Modeled in Max 5, Textured in PS7, approx, 26k polys.

Very interesting design.

Some crits (don't take em too seriously): I hope there is a balloon to go along with it (which I would love to see), because currently it looks more like a seafaring vessel (which it would do quite well as). Maybe Miyazaki and Final Fantasy have left too much of a mark on me, but I think a balloon would really make a huge difference.

The legs look too heavy and aerodynamically wrong and added to my confusion concerning the missing balloon, although with the added bouyancy (sp) of a balloon would probably be okay.

The textures are very nicely detailed, although lack "character". Don't get me wrong, I just think its a little too uniform. The part that stands out most to me is the embellishment on the hull, but there is not enough of it. If you went all out with those silver/gold trimmings it would really look beautiful and unique.

The spotlights look like they are shooting into a very dense atmosphere, and would be suited to an underwater scene rife with particles and debris -- but don't quite fit the airy upper atmosphere kind of look, unless its stormy.

Love the "atlantis" inspired windows... a bump map would really bring out the iron sills. One thing though, the windows along the mast are tinted blue, while the others are orange. This is somewhat offputting and IMHO would look better all as one color.

Lastly, but perhaps most importantly, I can't really tell if this is a warship, freighter, or whatever. If its a battleship, there needs to be more weaponry, and the windows on the mast would likely be a problem. If its a freighter, the legs should be equipped with claws and not feet. In other words, the design purpose is not clear, which in my books is usually a problem.

Would love to see the wire, looks like a lot of work and overall is a nice piece.

...one thing that stands out is the rust on the fins below. It looks a little too obvious...nice work!

Wow, very cool!
Don't know if it's the lighting but I like it the most with the brownish/yellow tones. I agree with satanatron about the fins, they are a bit too big. It looks like the legs wouldn't be able to bend very much without the fins hitting the ground.

Good work!

Thanks for the crits and comments guys.

jfalconer : you bring up a lot of issues I didn't think about, oh yeah and it does have a balloon of sorts. Actualy I came up with the idea of a giant "Blowfish" type of creature that fills itself up with hydrogen and is harnessed to the ship. My friend is working on that part.

The ship is more of a transport of troops and supplies, with defensive capabilities. It will be more populated when I finish the entire project.

The lights I'm still kinda messing with, I realise the fog is too much, and it should be less being that it is in the sky.

The blue windows are from the bridge, while the red/orange are from living quaters and other non functional areas (in regards to flying the ship)

The legs are mostly just for landing purposes and not walking, and in concept supposed to have a gripped treading on the bottom.

Again thanks for all the crits and comments guys..here is a shaded and wire view.

Thanks for the continued feedback guys, yeah I gotta say I got a lot of reference and inspiration from FF9, I love that art book!

I agree about the lights...they look like crap and I did them as an after thought....I gotta go back and fix them.

Thanks again guys!

hey love the design just one thing get rid of the legs, if its supposed to be some sort of air ship why are there legs??? thats the only thing i have to say, its an awsome design, btw. :wavey:

Thanks for the comments guys...

futureman: The reason it has legs, is becuase they are for landing. The ship is not really meant to walk. When in flight the legs fold up next to the hull.

I am working on an animation that I hope to get done in a about 5 weeks that will show the ship flying...I'll post it...if it's good. :D

5 weeks 0_0
will you animate more than just the ship?

The Green Man
05-09-2003, 08:31 AM
Yeah It's part of my senior project, nothing crazy I'm not an animator. I have a character that is in the animation named Malchus Valant.

http://www.landofkoz.com/3D/Malchus_model.jpg

I'm also working on the hanger for the ship. I'm hoping it will be cool, nothing crazy just somthing to set the mood, and theme for the game concept.
