this is my second attempt at modelling a human head, and im quite lost at this point cause i dont know where to improve the model now. thats why i posted so many pics. tell me what you think of it and where to put more effort into.

it took me about 1 week to model him (i know this is a lot of time but as i said is is my second ;)), and for about 2 weeks i am looking at it now, knowing not what to do to improve him. *desperate*

thanks folks

Firstly, welcome to CG Talk

Nice head you have there. I do have a few crits though :)

- the head is too symmetrical. Humans are very asymmetrical, so make some changes to either side to ensure this. It will give your character a lot more believabilty and realism.

- I think the head is a little too narrow. Just my opinion though - I guess some people DO have very narrow heads :)

- The brow is a little too neanderthal for this type of face, in my opinion. Hehehe as funny as it sounds, people with such heavy brows usually have fairly apelike faces too :p

Otherwise it seems like pretty solid modelling :)
Keep going

i agree with Leigh on the face being too narrow and symmetrical.
What really caught my eye was the mouth, looks a little small in proportion to the face. other than that i think it is an excellent work in progress.

@ leigh thanks for your warm welcome

yes its pure symmetry....havent tweaked it yet....but in this whole process i kind of forgot the importance of cracking up the symmetry....thanks

@ incr82nz thanks for your crit too.... yes the mouth is somewhat odd....guess ive to tweak it till i get sick of it ;)

some information on this character:

hes my online alter ego ;)
im kinda addicted to an online game called ultima online and this is going to be my maincharacter im playin over 2 1/2 years now.

hes a mage....neither good aligned nor evil....somewhere in between ;).
his mainactivity is fighting other players (mainly playerkillers), and he never runs from a fight.

hes about 35-40 years old and has seen a lot in his lifetime. thats why he often behaves somewhat sarcastic.
he seldom loses his composure, but if it happens....there ll be a mess :D

but towards his friends and strangers hes very open minded and warm hearted, always polite....except for people with bad behavior.

i want him to look experienced, friendly, sarcastic, somtimes childish but also dangerous. a man well known for his loyality towards his friends but feared by his enemies. and he hates injustice.

i better stop now to not annoy you ;) its hard to describe someone who is some much like me myself ;)

Leigh was right, but I think I can perhaps provide a better explanatoin of the thinness to the head

the mouth is a bit small form corner to corner though it falls within the possible parameters for a natural face.

The other thing thinning out the model is the sides of the head. The head becomes too flat behind the face especially on the sides. Even on the back it is still too blockish.

I would not call the brow neanderthalian, but the transition from forehead to underbrow is too sharp. Easily seen that it is not correct in the side view. It is the least believable part of your model.

It is hard to poke too much at this model. One of the best heads I have seen in a while. When you fix some of the small proportional problems and form problems then you should step into adjusting to offset the symetry. It is a good model that could be worked towards being photo real if you handled the rendering right.

Keep working on it and if you have no deadlines, take a break from it. It is hard to make good changes when you have stared at it for 30 hours refining pieces.
