View Full Version : weird surface shadows
Phredrek 02-24-2008, 05:29 PM hey everyone!

I'm having some issues with a scene file, there are weird shadows appearing on the surface of my polygons (the ground plane), strange lines that don't match the topology. anyone know what causes it and how I can just make it smooth?
I'm using maya 7.0
the surface in question was made with the create polygon tool and then extruded downward.
thanks!
your help is super appreciated!
Frederic.

Are you using shadow maps? Try decreasing the shadow bias, or, if speed allows for it, switching to raytraced shadows, which would probably look better for a scene like that anyway.

Hey man i know what that is.
good thing i came to this thread. :P
On you shadows turn up the bias a little bit, but it's a little sensitive so not so much.
it's because the model is making shadows onto itself.
Tell me if that fixes it.

thanks for getting back to me!
I tried with some raytracing and the results were oh so much better! However I cannot afford the time to render with ray tracing...
I played around with the settings and got something acceptable, basically upped the resolution and the filter size.
thanks for your suggestion!

Well ok, but you really don't have to turn up the filter size or anything, just the Depth map bias... that type of problem is mainly why that attribute is there anyways.
maybe you can just have that for future refrence. :)
thanks
