View Full Version : AO flicker bug?
STRAT 02-24-2008, 12:54 PM I'm in R10.506, and doing an animation with AO. havent used AO in ages :)
thing is, it's flickering like buggery. i dont remember AO doing this. The beauty of AO is that it's meant to be completely flicker free. and thats how i remember it.
whats happened? am i fogetting to flick a switch or something?
Here's my simple test file -

I downloaded your scene and had a short look on it. I think it's not an Ambient Occlusion related problem but a problem of the softshadow settings. The resolution is simply too low in my opinion and this could cause the flickering.
It could also be a problem of the "dispersion" setting in the AO-tab; perhaps you have to use more samples because of the high dispersion.
At the moment my C4D is busy with rendering, so I'm going to render your scene later ;)

thanks for looking at the file.
it isn't a shadow problem - it does exactly the same when switching from soft shads to ray traced shads. In fact, if you delete all lights completely and just use autolight it does the same.
About the dispersion setting - it is always on 100%, but even bumping up the min and max samples, and putting accuracy to 100%, and hitting render you can still see a difference from frame to frame. i should be able to use rock bottom sample settings with no aa and get a still flicker free animation. in fact i've done this many times before without a single flicker. thats why i'm curious whats changed now.

same here, but the ao should be flicker free with zero aa. all aa does is smooths the ao making it less grainy.

AO was never flicker free. What you see here is just standard noise/grain flicker.

Matthias

Is it a general AO issue or is it C4D related? I always thought that AO would be flicker free with moderate sample values (for example the settings in STRAT's scene file)?

The only way to prevent flickering is to decrease the visible noise/grain. It's a general problem with these types of sampling. if your scene is not moving it would more efficient to render an AO pass and comp it later.

thanks Bob.
yup, i re-visited some of my 'old' ao animation scenes and yes, they do flicker as you say. why i thought they remained flicker free i dont know.
