hi folks,

can anybody help me out with this? is there a way to model a thread (on a bolt oder bottle) without using boolean? i searched forum and web, but didnt find anything, except for the same boolean method over and over. a link to a tutorial would be sufficient.

thanks

I would probably use a helix primitive, scale it to what you want, delete some of the inside faces and append them with either the bridge or append to polygon tool. If you need a taper, I'd use either a taper deformer, or lattice with just 4 points. Hope that helps.

If you want it to be seamless with another object, scale it so it looks correct. Delete faces from both objects, combine the two objects, then stitch it together.

Matt's way is great, but you might want to see this, too.

It's in 3Dtotal.com in the Maya tutorial section

Hope this helps

not sure what app your using, but in LW you can build the shape you want the thread to be, and lathe it with an offset to get the thread.

Yeah, right.
Don't tell anyone which app you are using, could end up in someone helping you.

When I modeled a light bulb a while back I used the helix method, similar shape...
