I am fairly new to graphics and new to this forum. I am wanting to build a decent graphics system. I want a system that I can easily upgrade that will last me a few years. But through my searching I am getting more and more confused on which direction I hould go with it.

As far as application I will be running on the machine I will mainly be using the following apps.
Microsoft word business edition, business plan pro, photoshop cs3 master collection, autodesk maya, poser, poser figure artist, zbrush, corel draw, quark express, in design, autodesk inventor, autodesk alias, rhinoceros 4.0, softimage xsi, avid liquid...the list goes on I have a ton of programs. I am just learning some of the programs just for the heck of it. But some I use quite often. And I generally multi task quite a bit.

Now where I am stuck is I do not know if it would be better to go with a multi processor mobo or simply a quad core single processor. Again I want to be able to gradually upgrade the PC as time goes on.

Graphics card wise I want to go with the nvidia quadro series cards. I like nvidia and have had good luck with them.

So I was thinking I could go with the evga 780i mobo with a core 2 quad core and 800 ddr2 ram and SLI link 3 older series quadro cards.

Or I can go with a multi processor MOBO liek the tyan thunder 4 socket mobo and just stick one opteron quad core in it for now....then upgrade to more processors as tiem goes on.

I want a good fast PC mainly for the stuff I listed above. I dont game really at all. I might play games a totall of 2 weeks out of the year. So gaming isnt really of concern just a good PC for graphics. Any advice on what would be the best solution for me?

Honestly, you're good either way.

The difference between the two is so miniscule it doesn't matter. Look into the rest of your items and make your decisions there instead.

(But I'm jealous of your rig anyways.)

That is sort of what I was thinking. being that most programs dont take advantage of multiple processors yet. But I would hate to see software companies start taking advantage of multiple processors when I went with the sincle processor. But I think I am going to go with the single processor setup for now and next year build a multi processor system. This way I have a backup computer since I am building this because of a burnout.

Great idea.

ANd if it makes you feel any better, there aren't any new versions of (big package) software coming out in the next year....

You're probably safe! Be sure to post a list and pics of your rig once it's done so we can all get insanely jealous of that new technology smell....

Been a little bit since I started this thread. But I got my computer built. I went with a intel quad core Q6600 processor an asus maximus extreme mobo which can overclock like crazy, 1tb hard drive, firegl v5600 2gb (for now) ddr3 1333 ram, and dual 22" monitors. I have not o/ced it yet but its pretty dang fast. I am going to bench mark it later tonight so I will post my results.

Ok I ran a quick benchmark last night with nothing really setup or tweaked yet. Basic settings on the cpu, video card and well everything. The benchmark wasnt all that great only scored around 5432. I dont want to overclock the cpu as I am waiting for the brackets for the water cooling cpu block that didnt get put in the box. I also only ran 3D benchmark on the basic version so nothing was adjusted there either. I am considering picking up a second firegl card and possibly a vga waterblock.

Anyone use the vga waterblocks?
