I'm having trouble figuring out why my cpu usage is so damn sporradic...

for example, right now i only have aim and mozilla firefox open and useage never drops below 14%. I know this isn't a lot, but it's just enough to be a bother on a rather old P4 laptop that keeps my core temp (via speedfan) to 77C which is just shy of the thing shutting down. All of the fans in the computer are still working and i'm pretty sure the heatsink isn't clogged...

anyway, I'm concerned that there is something running in the background that i'm not aware of and if so, where do I find it and how the hell do i get rid of it?

edit: i also get a really annoying beep about every 30 seconds exfrom under the keyboard that sounds axactly the same as the noise made just before it shuts off due to no battery juice.

lots

Alot of flash usage can get the CPU usage up like that.. Lots of tabs.. of course you should check task manager to see how many processes are running too :)

Something in excess of 70 is pretty high in my book...

yeah, right now i have 60 tasks running using 558mb's of ram with firefoxes 3 tabs open... still too much but this isn't my workstation so it's not a big deal.
