View Full Version : [WIP] Enviroment + Locomotive
BloodRaven 02-22-2008, 09:15 PM Here are stills of a game cinematic for a school project that I'm working on. In a team of 4.
I'm working on part of the enviroment and the locomotive. The locomotive has carriage like wheels so it can move around without train tracks, steam punk influence. Gatling guns are on pivot type brackets so they can move around a bit.
Rendered with MentalRay. Lighting: Skylight with HDR and a MR Area Spot.
C&C welcome :)

Nice work,
Right now from the model it doesnt feel believable that this vehicle would be able to navigate those streets. I'd have to see it animated I guess. At this point it looks like a train that belongs on tracks.
Maybe you can shed some light on how it turns etc.

Thanks,
Well the locomotive won't be turning in these streets, in the animation it's staying on the street that it's on. The front and rear trailing trucks can pivot (kinda like a monster truck, it can turn the front and rear wheels) but the turning radius is too wide to turn in small streets.

Is it going to be used ingame as a normal map for a lower-poly train too? That would be neat to see :D

Heavy vehicles aren't allowed on cobble streets because the weight destroys them. A locomotive weighs MUCH more than the average dump truck. Not only would this completely destroy the street, it would not move due to sinking into the ground under it's own weight. All would be believable with a simple track.
The art is good, but logistics are not present.

Nah unfortunately. But I'll definately keep the train for later use, maybe then I'll use it :)
We'll see what the next school project requires.
Gradius: We haven't thought about that, good point, we just looked at the coolness factor.

The wireframe looks great, but i feel your texturing/lighting setup isn't doing your modelling skills any justice. Especially in the first screenshot, a lot of the detials on the front of the train seem to be lost. Perhaps add some subtle colour variton for the headlamps, bolts etc...

Yeah we're still tweaking the lighting setup in the scene. The buildings are causing a lot of shadows. I added a soft omni infront of the train and in the rear. Still dark, just needs tweaking. The project deadline is this friday so I don't have much time to tweak the texture :S

Here's an older shot without the buildings.
