For a week I will do an experiment at the DSF.
It is called RED MARS.
The idea is for you the artist to create concept art for an upcoming Visual Effects challenge.

You may go as much detail as you wish in your concept art.
There a no rules this week, so let your imaginations soar.

Just imagine you are doing the concept art for a film..

Have fun guys, and see you all in one week.

Mars is at War

Draw Concept Art for a upcoming visual effects challenge.

Friday Topic: – Mars at War!

Background:

Think of this as the US War of Independence part II.
After 60 years of existence the mars colonies want independence from planet earth

Remember that the free mars forces are outgunned, so they WILL fight dirty.

The look we are going for is realistic scifi....less Star Trek more oil workers in space.

Click Spoiler Tag for more background info:

The Gaea Group :
The year is 2108.
It is 100 years from today, the world at the time is divided in 5 superpowers

United America
European Consortium
Russian Union
Crescent Alliance
Asian Union
The because of the prohibitive amount of effort and money, the Mars Colony was created as a joint effort from United America, European Consortium and the Russian Union. The colony has existed for about 60 years. This effort was called The Gaea Group

After the Moon colony, Mars is THE second largest colony in the solar system.

The core economy is based on:

• Mining
• Space Tourism
• Gateway Port.

Their charter mission is to keep the shipping yards running, and the ore flowing. The colonies build on the surface of Mars there ONLY to support these efforts.

FREE MARS Rebels:

There are 4 mayor settlements on Mars,

New Rome(Tourism), The Gustav(Mining), The Hefestus ( Gateway Port) and the Red Blossom (Research).

The capital and largest of all the the settlements is the Gustav, named after its founder, Alexi Gustav. The resistance is based there, and in the caves of mars.

The "Free Mars" rebels are an ragtag alliance of various planetary factions.
Among them The Colonial Civil Defense Force (Land) and the Mars Mining Guild (Air/Space).

And for earth to fight this war, will come to a great expense. The supply line will be long and the moon colonists are not exactly happy campers either.

The main ally for the Free Mars rebels is the powerful Asian Union who have their own independent Mars colony.. The Red Blossom.

Art Direction:

We are looking for grungy look for the Mars forces.
A dirty lived in used look should be seen in all aspects of Mars design motifs.
From their ships to their uniforms to they banged up patrol ships. They did not have time to get real combat suits & ships, so they improvised with the mining equipment they had.

They are fighting a guerrilla war both on land and space, and their look should reflect that. The color palette for their uniforms & machines should be earth & rust colors. See below)

On the other hand
Earth forces should be clean and well organized, and too dependent on technology.
All their designs should have clean lines. The earth forces are well organized and a bit arrogant, sure of a quick victory. The design motif should reflect this.
The color palette for their uniforms & machines should be blues & grey colors. See below)

Okay so environments and speed painting are not my forte. At all. But, I gave it a shot. The idea behind this piece is to lure as much of the earth fleets as possible into the mines where the miners have the home advantage. Then they blow up key parts of the mine on top of the fleets. And, by key parts, I mean mines that are closed and no longer affect the economy… I think it might look better if I somehow put in the earth fleets being crushed but I'm not sure how I would do that yet. So, I still posted because I'm unlikely to touch this piece again.
